Sony Pictures Entertainment reported a revenue decline for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. Sales fell 13% year over year to $1.978 billion. Operating income rose 21% to $156 million.

The company pointed to fewer series deliveries in its television productions unit. Revenue there dropped 32% to $571 million.

    Theatrical slate thin

SPE released only one theatrical film in the quarter, TriStar’s comedy “The Breadwinner.” Theatrical revenue for the period came to $30 million.

The motion pictures unit, which covers theatrical, home entertainment and TV/streaming sales, saw revenue fall 13% to $645 million from $742 million a year earlier. The drop came mainly from weaker theatrical results.

Crunchyroll and media networks offset losses

Media networks revenue, which includes TV channels and the Crunchyroll streaming service, rose 10% to $744 million from $674 million. Sony said it operates 38 television channels. Crunchyroll had over 21 million paid subscribers as of March 2026.

    Music segment posts strong gains

Sony’s music division saw revenue climb 21% for the quarter, reaching 557.9 billion yen. That is up from 459 billion yen in the same period last year.

Renewed interest in Michael Jackson’s catalog helped drive the growth. The boost coincided with the theatrical release of the Lionsgate biopic “Michael.” Both “Thriller” and “Bad” ranked among the top-selling albums during the quarter.

    PlayStation sales flat, profit jumps

The Game & Network Services segment, which includes PlayStation hardware and software, had flat sales of 937.1 billion yen ($5.88 billion) for the quarter. Operating income rose 37% to 202.0 billion yen ($1.27 billion).

Sony attributed the profit jump to U.S. tariff refunds. Those refunds followed a Supreme Court ruling in February that invalidated former President Trump’s global tariffs.

PlayStation users grow, hardware sales slip

Total PlayStation monthly active users reached 125 million accounts in June. That marks a 2% increase year over year.

Total playtime fell 4% from the year-prior quarter. Sony said user engagement remained solid. The company noted a tough comparison against the same quarter last year, which benefited from major season updates and new hit titles.

PS5 hardware sales dropped to 1.5 million units for the quarter. That is down from 2.5 million units sold in the same period a year earlier.

    Full-year guidance raised

Sony raised its guidance for total company revenue in fiscal year 2026. The company now expects 12.5 trillion yen ($78.5 billion) in revenue for the year. That is up 2% from the prior forecast of 12.48 trillion yen for fiscal year 2025.
