Silo: 4 Big Questions I Have After That Shocking Season 3 Finale

SiloSeason 3 started off seeming like it could be a misstep – but ended up proving all the naysayers wrong. The continuing story of Sheriff Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) and her quest to uncover the secrets of her dystopian society took a whole new turn when Silo 18 finally found itself facing doom at the hands of the “safeguard” system that pumps poison gas into the silo. Nichols and her crew managed to distract the computer overseer long enough for Silo 18 engineers to close off the safeguard pipe, and in doing so confirmed that Silo 1 is a man-operated structure using the mask of an AI entity to control the other silos.

SPOILERS! The SiloSeason 3 Finale also confirmed why the present-day storyline had been added to the show: Congressman Daniel Keene (Ashley Zukerman) is revealed to have made it into Silo 1 as the Apocalypse happened, but he’s been radically changed. The compassionate crusader was mind-wiped by memory drugs (courtesy of Dr. Victor Crnkovich) and repurposed as a “specialist,” named “Troy,” a strategist called upon to solve major issues like uprisings or rebellions that happen in the other silos, often through cold, calculating, and brutal methods (like massacring Silo 17 to keep them from escaping). In the end, Juliette and Troy found themselves on opposite sides of Silo 1’s door, feigning peace, as each secretly prepared for war.

Here are the questions that will be burning in my mind until SiloSeason 4 premieres next summer:

4. Did Daniel Choose to Become Troy?

A lot of character work was done building up Daniel Keene during SiloSeason 3. He turned out to be a complex and nuanced character, with a better moral center than we expected from someone in politics. That’s what makes the season finale reveal such a mind-screw: “Troy” is introduced as a man totally cold and calculating about staging the massacre of thousands of escapees from Silo 17 and making it all seem like they died from exposure to the outside world.

We still don’t know the backstory of how “Daniel” turned into “Troy,” and until Season 4 gets here, I’ll be wondering whether it was a voluntary or involuntary choice. The key may be Helen: if something happened to her, Daniel would be broken in a way that could push him towards using Dr. Victor’s (Matt Craven) memory-altering drug to forget his emotional pain and give his life new purpose: ensuring a better world gets built. The other scenario is that Daniel was not cooperative after being tricked into entering Silo 1 on the day of the apocalypse, and rather than waste the precious human resource, Victor, Senator Rosalind Thurman (Laura Innes), and the other powers that be chose to make use of Daniel’s strategic and tactical prowess. Both narratives create deeply compelling character drama I want to see explored.

3. Is Juliette Daniel’s Descendant?

Silois proving to be a fantastic sci-fi show, but the drama has just as often been great. After seeing how much investment was put into the Daniel/Helen storyline, and that duck Pez dispenser, I have to believe that SiloSeason 4 is doing something deeper than just converging the present day and future dystopia into one climactic story arc. And the Season 3 Finale (plus that Season 4 preview that dropped) has me spotting some clues that lead to a question:

Is Juliette Nichols Daniels’ descendant? There’s a lingering moment in the finale where Daniel sees Juliette’s face on the monitor screen outside the door to Silo 1, and it seemed to imply (both physically and symbolically) that there is a connection between the two. Silo 18 has allegedly been in operation for 300+ years, without the cryogenic sleep technology we saw Troy (and others) using in Silo 1. Assuming a major Season 4 twist is that Helen ended up in Silo 18 while pregnant, Juliette could turn out to be her descendant, 10 to 12 generations later, if the post-apocalyptic timline is accurate. That connection could be key to redeeming Daniel, and ending the imperialistic reign of Silo 1.

2. What Is the Purpose of “The Directive”?

“The Pact” is a set of rules and laws that were created by the experts in Silo 1 as a form of social order and control within the silo communities; previously it was reavealed that the leaders of the silos in IT govern the populace from another set of rules called “The Order.” However, the Season 3 Finale reveals that Silo 1 has its own overarching guiding principle, “The Directive.”

We only get brushstrokes of what the Directive is, such as when Troy states that “The top priority, per the Directive, is to prevent contamination between silos,” before he orders the massacre of the Silo 17 escapees. It’s clear that the Directive is the set of rules within Silo 1 that supercedes any of the laws of the silos, but what is the end goal? Why did Senator Thurman, Victor, industrialist Per Stensen (Colin Hanks) and others all come together to build the silos and populate them? Why keep such tight control of the population but also kill them off en masse? And what kind of world are they trying to rebuild? The Directive has those answers, and I can’t wait to hear them!

1. Is Earth Inhabitable Again?

The opening sequence of the SiloSeason 3 Finale was revelatory on several levels. Seeing Silo 1’s operations and technology was eyebrow-raising; seeing Daniel transformed into “Troy” was shocking, and the massacre of Silo 17 was so horrible it almost makes you forget to ask why it was necessary. But that’s clever sleight of hand, because that’s exactly the question that we should be asking, here.

Silo 17’s inhabitants made it outside – and they were fine. They didn’t die of any environmental factors, and Troy’s entire attack plan was designed to create the illusion that the poison air was responsible for the mass casualties. Control seems to be the major motivation for Silo 1, which only leads back to question #2, above. Earth seems ready for the retaking, so why won’t Silo 1 let it happen?

Thankfully we won’t have to wait long: SiloSeason 4 will premiere in July of 2027.
