    Highlights

    • Shueisha’s Manga Million launches with more than one million pages of manga translated into 100 languages.
    • The platform features major titles like One Piece, Demon Slayer, and Jujutsu Kaisen, with 300 first-time translations.
    • Through Manga Million, Shueisha aims to expand global manga accessibility, promote completed series, and combat manga piracy.

Shueisha has launched Manga Million, a new multilingual manga platform that will make more than one million pages of manga available in over 100 languages, including English and Hindi. The initiative debuted on Aug 6 as part of Shueisha’s 100th anniversary celebrations.

Manga Million marks one of the publisher’s most ambitious global localization projects to date. The platform requires no account or payment and makes roughly 400 manga titles available worldwide for a limited time.

MANGA Plus by Shueisha Editor-in-Chief Shuhei Hosono, who initiated the project, said the project began as a thought experiment, then expanded as an effort to make manga accessible to readers regardless of what language they speak.

Shueisha’s Manga Million Translates Hundreds of Series Without AI

At launch, Manga Million features more than 400 manga series spanning shojo, shonen, and other categories. The platform supports languages including English, Hindi, Arabic, Spanish, French, Turkish, Korean, Polish, and Tagalog.

The lineup includes globally recognized titles such as Naruto, One Piece, Kingdom, Bleach, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, NANA, and Oshi no Ko, alongside numerous legacy and niche works. Among these titles, 150 are shojo manga, a demographic that rarely gets this scale of localization measure. 300 of the manga are receiving translations for the first time.

A notable aspect of the rollout is Shueisha’s stance on translation quality. Hosono confirmed that no AI-generated translations were used for Manga Million. Instead, the publisher relied on its “translation framework.” That decision distinguishes the initiative at a time when AI-assisted localization has become increasingly common.

    The Strategy BehindShueisha’s Localization Scale

Hosono said the goal extends beyond expanding the readership. His arguments leaned towards the idea that language should no longer determine whether someone can discover Japanese manga. Even though there are many translated works, he feels “there are so many great series out there waiting to be discovered,” and that’s where Manga Million comes in.

Shueisha’s President and Representative Director Hideaki Hayashi echoed a similar sentiment about bringing the “richness and diversity of manga culture” to readers. He emphasized, “one of a publisher’s most important responsibilities is to connect creative talent with the public.”

Hosono said Manga Million targets completed series that MANGA Plus’ simultaneous-publishing model could not cover, and he hopes the free access will curb piracy.

Piracy is one of the prominent issues clouding Japan’s anime/manga industries. Manga accounted for 73.09% of all publishing piracy traffic tracked globally in 2025, according to anti-piracy firm MUSO. The country also recorded a loss of ¥2.6T (~$17.0B) between 2022 and 2025, due to illegal distribution.

Hosono additionally informed that Shueisha is deciding how the pages will remain accessible once the limited-time window closes. He also hinted that a paid subscription model is under consideration. “It would be amazing if MANGA Plus by Shueisha could eventually take on all of these features,” he further added.

The project also builds on MANGA Plus’ international publishing strategy. Since launching the platform in 2019, the publisher has steadily expanded simultaneous multilingual releases of Weekly Shonen Jump titles to a global audience.

The Manga Million platform launch coincides with a publishing deficit for Shueisha. For the first time since 1971, the publisher recorded fewer than 1M copies circulated of its signature Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in the first quarter of 2026, as per the Japan Magazine Publishers Association. The translation initiative acknowledges the industry push towards penetrating the overseas manga market, as the readership falls short in Japan
