7 Series To Watch If You Liked ‘Slow Horses’

There’s so much to appreciate about Slow Horses(2022), and it all comes down to the fact that it’s a show that feels familiar and ordinary. Yes, we’re dealing with MI5 agents, specifically ones working in Slough House, but they feel more human and a lot more grounded than agents typically do. These characters are no James Bond, and that’s a good thing despite the fact that one of them—Jack Lowden—is rumored to be the next Bond. Their natural, albeit strange charisma makes them feel like people we know, and it allows the show to stand out in a sea of endless crime genres.
Chances are that if you love Slow Horses, you love how grounded the show feels. How it doesn’t shy away from ensuring that these characters feel real, that they fall and crumble. In other words, affectionately, it gives us a glimpse into the lives of losers. It’s even in the theme song, “Strange Game,” by Mick Jagger.
Slow Horsesis a show about the underdogs, and it’s about their means to make it despite the cards stacked against them. It’s fun, fresh, dynamic, unique, and it provides something that’s weirdly comforting, despite how many awful things consistently happen to these characters. In truth, there aren’t a lot of shows like Slow Horses. You can try to watch British crime dramas or any sort of spy drama, but Slow Horses scratches such a specific itch that it’s really hard to find things like it. But there are shows that come close, even if they aren’t similar in every way. You can catch them on Netflix, Hulu, and more!
Stylistically, where writing is concerned, Down Cemetery Road is one of the closest shows we can compare to Slow Horsesbecause it’s also adapted from Mick Herron’s novels. Starring the incomparable Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson alongside many renowned British stars, the story centers on a private investigator and a mystery case that’s been unsolved. I would actually pay big money to see a Jackson Lamb and Zoë Boehm meet-up. It’d be glorious.
As serious as both shows are, part of what makes Slow Horsesso easy to rewatch often is that it’s legitimately hilarious. If British humor is something you find deeply satisfying, then both shows will be incredibly satisfying in that regard. Down Cemetery Roadwill be returning for a second season, so now’s an A+ time to catch up.

It’d be an actual crime to create a list of shows centered around fictional crimes and not include Broadchurch in it. Even if you’ve never seen a single episode, you still likely know about it. David Tennant and Oliivering compelling high-stakes drama, but doing so quietly is ultimately where it shines best
There’s so much empathy and careful character building that makes Broadchurchstand out as a show, and its legacy casting on top of mass popularity essentially makes it a British staple that’s impossible to ignore. Not to mention that the very British humor is sprinkled throughout for those looking closely enough.

Netflix‘s Dept. Q is another show that can be closely compared to Slow Horsesbecause of how Matthew Goode’s Carl Morck resembles Gary Oldman’s Jackson Lamb. There’s an odd similarity in their curmudgeonly behavior and the grumpy dynamics that they share with everyone in their office. The show is dark, gripping, and it features a consistent seasonal case, just like Slow Horses.In many crime dramas, the case changes with every new episode, but with Slow Horses and Dept Q, the case lasts throughout the season.
The show has already been renewed for a second season, and its remarkable pacing makes it easy to binge-watch. If you want a grumpy hero and also someone who’s easy on the eyes, look no further.

In more ways than one, Endeavour is very much not likeSlow Horses at all, but there’s something so distinctly similar between its lead character, Shaun Evans’ Endeavour Morse, and Jack Lowden’s River Cartwright. There’s a sadness in them that comes from this inherent loneliness that neither of them talks about. It feels raw and honest, and it’s an excellent look into character journeys throughout the season.
Unlike Slow Horses, though, Endeavour is an episodic series in which the case changes during every episode. It’s one of the best procedural crime dramas you’ll ever see, and all nine seasons are now available for binging. It’s worth every minute, specifically for how entertaining the cases are, but simultaneously how grounded. They never feel far-fetched, and they never once feel like they’re trying too hard. Just like howSlow Horses feels incredibly organic, so does Endeavour.

Many people know and love Charlie Cox from Marvel’s Daredevil (2015) or a movie like Stardust (2007),but you haven’t fully seen his range as an actor until you watch Treason.The limited series explores betrayal and heavy, haunting heartaches all while delivering a series that’s fully action-packed from start to finish.
While the comedy inSlow Horseshelps it feel more palatable, Treason is on the heavier side, so be aware of that when you start. It’s one of the shows on this list that almost feels like a really long action movie instead, and might even be perfect for people who loved all the angst in Netflix’s Bodyguard (2018).

While again, there aren’t too many similarities between the essence of Slow Horsesand Line of Duty,the vibes are all there in a way because of undercover work, new employees, trust issues, and a case that spans across a full season. Line of Dutyworks so well for fans of procedurals that want sharp writing, fleshed-out characters, and a gripping narrative throughout.
There’s plenty to appreciate about the show, mostly because there’s a hopeful element to it, which a lot of times crime shows omit. It feels weirdly comforting, despite how dark things can be, so if you’re someone who needs a bit of light in your dramas, this is the show for you.

While all the shows on this list are either based in or feature characters from the United Kingdom, The Americans is, well, a show about Americans or, in this case, Russian spies posing as Americans. I’d be remiss if I wrote a list about crime dramas and didn’t mention what I believe to be the greatest crime drama of all time.
Brilliant from start to finish, what TheAmericans achieved is something that I don’t know we’ll ever find again. This one specifically works for people who want more romance in Slow Horses or for people who want performances that feel really driven by physical work in the same way that we get through a lot of these shows.
Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell deliver some of the finest performances on TV, and everything that we get with them is, in short, otherworldly. There’s really no spy drama like The Americans,which acts as a marriage story all through. Everything about it works, and it also features what I firmly believe is the best series finale of all time.
