Whether you’re into superheroes, romance, horror or anything else, a new event for indie comics fans is coming to Sheffield City Centre this autumn – the Sheffield Comic ARts Fair (SCARF). Taking place in Trafalgar Warehouse in the city centre, a dedicated event space. SCARF will host 37 tables for independent and small press creators from Sheffield and further afield. With a focus on indie comics and a commitment to providing an LGBTQ-friendly and explicitly anti-racist/fascist space for creators and punters, it will look to showcase the strong creative culture of the Steel City. The guest line-up will cover the full spectrum of comics creators (from writers to artists, letterers to editors and zine-makers to publishers) to show the diverse range of skills and talents that exist in the comics industry. “I’ve thought for years that Sheffield needed something in this space,” said organiser Chris Mole. “We have a large ‘comic-con’ event at the arena but nothing that I could see for creators at the indie level, which is where some of the most exciting and powerful work is done. It’s my hope that this is a lovely, fun day for everyone exhibiting and that the people of Sheffield can enjoy the wealth of talent that the UK comics scene has to offer in a relaxed and friendly environment.” SCARF will be completely free entry, and will feature a reading corner hosted and curated by Graphic Novel Reading Room (a regular presence on the UK comic convention circuit and a Sheffield institution), workshops for kids to learn how to draw comics run by Marc Jackson of Macc-Pow Comics Festival (Macclesfield), and a licensed bar run by the venue for drinks and refreshments. SCARF will run on October 10 from 10am to 5pm.
