She Held the Door for Her Boyfriend at a Convention — A Stranger Blocked Them, Demanding He Redo It ‘The Right Way

Some people have strong ideas about how other couples are supposed to act.
A woman and her boyfriend found that out almost immediately after arriving at a pop-culture convention.
She reached the door first and held it open, which apparently bothered a stranger enough to start yelling at them.
At first, the couple thought they were somehow being kicked out, but then the woman explained what had upset her.
She wanted them to go back outside so the boyfriend could reopen the door and “do it right.”
Read on to see what happened when they refused.
A stranger [F] tried to make my boyfriend [24M] “redo” opening a door because he didn’t hold it open for me [24F]
My boyfriend and I are both 24 and have been together for 3 years. We live in the Deep South, which is probably important to the context of the story.
We don’t really follow traditional gender roles, and honestly, neither of us thinks much about things like who is “supposed” to open a door for whom. Usually, whoever happens to be in front holds the door, and sometimes we’re both holding it for each other because we’re walking in together. It’s just not something we think about.
We’re also both huge nerds and introverts, and one of our favorite things to do together is collect comics and other weird pop-culture stuff.
It all started when they walked into a pop-culture convention.
So today, we went to a pop-culture convention we were both really excited about.
Literally as we were walking through the front door at the con, a random woman started yelling at us to get out.
At first, we were completely confused. We hadn’t even made it fully inside the convention yet, so we genuinely thought maybe we were being kicked out.
Then, after like maybe 30 seconds of this lady berating us, yelling at us to get out, she finally started going off about how my boyfriend didn’t hold the door for me.
At one point, the woman started touching them and being even more forceful.
I was actually the one holding the door for both of us because I happened to get there first. He hadn’t slammed the door in my face or done anything remotely rude. Maybe her reaction would’ve been a bit understandable if it genuinely looked like an abusive situation.
This woman was probably around our age, maybe a little older, and she was genuinely angry and going off on us.
She actually blocked us from entering the convention and started insisting that we go back outside so we could “try again and do it right,” meaning my boyfriend was supposed to hold the door open for me.
At one point, she was physically touching us and trying to move us back outside while lecturing my boyfriend about how he should treat me.
Then, she turned her sights on the girlfriend.
She kept going on about how I needed to “respect myself” and that she was “just looking out for me.”
Looking back on it after a couple of hours, that was the part that really bothered me.
If she genuinely thought I was being mistreated, she could have pulled me aside and asked if I was okay. Instead, she loudly berated my boyfriend in front of everyone, physically prevented us from entering the convention, and tried to force us to reenact the door-opening situation according to her idea of how a couple should behave.
It felt less like she was trying to help me and more like some weird humiliation ritual.
Finally, the woman stopped and walked away.
I’m completely fine with traditional gender roles if that’s what makes other couples happy. If a woman likes having her boyfriend open the door for her, that’s totally fine. That’s just not how my relationship works.
My boyfriend and I were both so shocked that we basically just stood there staring at her while she went off.
We’re both pretty awkward and introverted, so neither of us was exactly prepared to have a stranger suddenly start policing our relationship. That whole interaction, we didn’t say a thing. We both just stared at her, crazy, while she was basically talking to herself.
Eventually, she stopped and walked away, but the whole interaction completely soured my mood. I was honestly considering just going home because I felt so uncomfortable and embarrassed.
Still, she can’t get over what this woman did.
We thankfully decided to stay. And I’m glad we did, because pretty much everyone else at the convention was genuinely awesome. We ended up having a really good time and stayed for a few hours.
I’m used to people being curious about our relationship because, apparently, we act more like best friends than a “standard” couple.
People occasionally ask about our dynamic, and I don’t mind explaining it. Most people are respectful and just genuinely curious.
But I’ve never had someone try to physically stop us from entering somewhere because they thought my boyfriend wasn’t being “chivalrous” enough.
Oh my. Regardless of what you personally think, that’s a little far to take it.
Let’s see if the people over at Reddit would agree.
That would’ve been funny.
That would’ve been a valid question.
Apparently, she would’ve instantly regretted touching this person.

This is such a good point.
That woman needs to mind her own business.
If the boyfriend’s behavior doesn’t bother his girlfriend, then who is this lady to speak up?
Plus, who acts like that in public?
Trying to physically move two strangers because they didn’t open a door the way you wanted is utterly ridiculous.
