Big news for fans of military action dramas! We finally have a release date for one of the biggest shows heading to Netflix from therecent Paramount licensing megadeal announced towards the beginning of the year. “Multiple seasons” of the hit series SEAL Team are officially slated to land on Netflix US on August 18th.
As we previously reported, SEAL Team is part of a surprise licensing agreement between Netflix and Paramount Global that is also bringing titles like Taylor Sheridan’s Mayor of Kingstown and the medical drama Watson to the service. So far, we’ve only seen one major show come to Netflix as part of this deal, with that being Lawmen: Bass Reeves back in June.
While we don’t have the exact confirmation on how many seasons are hitting on August 18th just yet, we do know it will be “multiple.” Given the show’s hefty backlog, it’s going to be the perfect late-summer binge. We know it’ll be at least two, but will we get all seven seasons? Fingers crossed we find out imminently, and we’ll update this post once we do know (we suspect it could be tomorrow, July 22nd, when Netflix is expected to drop the full August schedule).
For those unfamiliar with the series, SEAL Team is a military drama that follows the professional and personal lives of Bravo Team, the most elite unit of Navy SEALs. The series dives deep into the intense training, planning, and execution of the most dangerous, clandestine missions around the globe.
The ensemble cast is led by television veteran David Boreanaz (Bones, Angel) as Master Chief Special Warfare Operator Jason Hayes, the respected but burdened leader of the squad. Rounding out the elite team are Max Thieriot (Fire Country), Neil Brown Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), A.J. Buckley (CSI: NY), Toni Trucks (Corporate), and Jessica Paré (Mad Men).
SEAL Team originally premiered on CBS back in September 2017, quickly establishing itself as a reliable ratings performer and a fan-favorite procedural for the network. It aired its first four seasons on traditional broadcast television before making a highly publicized and unexpected move to streaming. Midway through its fifth season in late 2021, the series transitioned exclusively to Paramount+, where it enjoyed a successful run as a flagship original for the platform. This jump to streaming famously allowed the writers to push the envelope, incorporating darker, more mature storylines and grittier action sequences than network television would allow. The series ultimately concluded its run with a seventh and final season on the streamer in late 2024.
Wait, isn’t Seal Team already on Netflix?
If the name sounds familiar, you might be thinking of Netflix’s own animated feature film! Back in December 2021, Netflix released an animated movie called Seal Team, featuring the voices of J.K. Simmons and Kristen Schaal, about an actual seal who assembles a squad to fight back against great white sharks.
To be clear: this new addition is the live-action David Boreanaz military drama, not the animated shark-fighting seals. (Though we recommend both!)
