As ‘SCTV’ Doc Hits Netflix, Where Are the Sketch Comedy Show’s Stars Now?

    October 29, 2026, 8:00 am

    Everett Collection

Though its semi-centennial anniversary earlier this year didn’t get the same play as, say, SNL50, the sketch-comedy series SCTV is getting another moment in the spotlight with the new Netflix documentary SCTV: The Greatest Show You’ve Never Heard Of.

Running on Canadian and then American TV from 1976 to 1983, SCTV took talent from Toronto’s Second City comedy troupe and offered sketches in the form of clips from a fictitious TV network.

And though Netflix’s doc presumes you’ve never heard of SCTV, you’ve almost certainly heard of some of the show’s stars, particularly if you’re a fan of Saturday Night Live, Ghostbusters, or Schitt’s Creek. Get to know the cast members — and their post-SCTV careers — below.

Eugene Levy Aside from his SCTV work, Levy made a name for himself in Christopher Guest mockumentary films — including Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind — and in the American Pie series of comedy films. Levy and his son, Dan, co-created and starred in Schitt’s Creek, which swept the major comedy categories of the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards and gave Levy his first Emmy wins since his SCTV days. Levy starred as himself in Only Murders in the Building Season 4, and he currently hosts the travel docuseries The Reluctant Traveler.

Andrea Martin These days, Martin is known as a star of the My Big Fat Greek Wedding film trilogy and for her roles on Broadway. In fact, she’s currently the actor with the most Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical nominations, having received nods for My Favorite Year (1993), Candide (1997), Oklahoma! (2002), Young Frankenstein (2008), and Pippin (2013). Her wins for My Favorite Year and Pippin mean she’s tied with Audra McDonald and Judy Kaye for the most wins in that category. More recently, Martin guest-starred in The Gilded Age, Overcompensating, and Best Medicine.

Martin Short After SCTV, Short starred in Saturday Night Live from 1984 to 1985 and became a bankable comedy film star with his performances in the likes of Three Amigos, Innerspace, and the Father of the Bride series. On television, Short starred in The Martin Short Show, Primetime Glick, Mulaney, and Maya & Marty. On stage, Martin earned the 1999 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical with his performance in Little Me. Since 2021, Short has starred in Only Murders in the Building alongside frequent comedy partner Steve Martin, and he also hosts the latest iteration of the game show Match Game.
Dave Thomas in ‘John Candy: I Like Me’

Dave Thomas Thomas followed SCTV with the short-lived sketch-comedy series The Dave Thomas Show before joining the cast of the hit sitcom Grace Under Fire. In 2003, Thomas and Moranis voiced moose characters based on SCTV’s Bob and Doug McKenzie in the Disney film Brother Bear. In other Hollywood work, Thomas wrote episodes of Grace Under Fire, Bones, and The Blacklist and served as a consulting producer on the latter two. And in 2025, Thomas and other SCTV stars paid tribute to one of their beloved colleagues in the documentary John Candy: I Like Me.

John Candy After breaking out in SCTV, Candy starred in big-screen comedies including Spaceballs, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Uncle Buck, and Cool Runnings. He also had small parts in The Blues Brothers, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Little Shop of Horrors, and Home Alone. Off screen, Candy was a co-owner of the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. He died of a heart attack in 1994 at age 43 and was recently memorialized in the documentary John Candy: I Like Me.

Harold Ramis Ramis wrote and starred in 1984’s Ghostbusters and 1989’s Ghostbusters II, joining Moranis in those productions. He also directed the films Caddyshack, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Groundhog Day, Analyze This, and Analyze That. Stepping in front of the camera, Ramis took small parts in As Good as It Gets, High Fidelity, and Knocked Up. He died of complications from autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis in 2018 at age 69. Second City honored him by introducing the Harold Ramis Film School in Chicago in 2017, and in 2024, the city of Chicago declared February 2 as Harold Ramis Day.

Catherine O’Hara O’Hara endeared herself to millennial pop culture fans with her parts in the 1988 comedy film Beetlejuice and the 1990s Home Alone movies. She and Levy costarred in Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind, as well as For Your Consideration, another Christopher Guest mockumentary. O’Hara gained a new generation of fans when she played the Moira Rose to Levy’s Johnny Rose in Schitt’s Creek, a role that earned her a Primetime Emmy Award. Her subsequent credits included The Last of Us and The Studio. She died of a pulmonary embolism in January at age 71.
