ROG has sent over one of their latest laptops, the <a href="https://rog.asus.com/laptops/rog-strix/rog-strix-scar-18-2026/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>ROG Strix SCAR 18 (2026 G835LXG-TQ468W). Stating on their website as “Dominate Windows 11 Pro gaming with an Intel Core Ultra 9 processor 290HX plus and up to Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU with a 175W max TGP”. I am not going to lie, this sounds and looks like a beast of a machine, so let’s jump in, put it through its paces and see how it goes, as there is some serious equipment in this one, so hold on!
Opening the box, you are greeted with the Laptop, an absolute beast of a charger, bigger and heavier than anything I have seen on a laptop. Mind you, the majority of my laptop experience is on work computers, which aren’t built for gaming.
The laptop dimensions are 39.9 x 29.8 x 2.35 cm, with a total weight of 3.7kg, and it feels every bit of that weight. Powering it up, I can’t help but let out a little giggle of joy seeing all the LEDs, 360 degrees around the base, and the gentle wave of LEDs that covers the keyboard. A big “Wow, that’s so cool” from my kids, as they point out the Strix being displayed on the lid of the mini billboard.
The part where you rest your wrists is quite large, with the keyboard set up high toward the screen, giving your wrist a nice, comfortable position; also, there is enough room for a small portable mouse. The keys are backlit, chiclet RGB and personally, I found them a little shallow and barely spaced like most laptops, making it hard during fast-paced games; I found myself looking down to check where my fingers were a lot of the time.
Onto what’s driving this behemoth: the Intel Core Ultra 9 processor 290HX Plus, 2.7 GHz, 24 cores, and 32GB DDR5-6400 RAM (you can upgrade to 128 GB, which is the maximum the system will support). Some serious power there; to get the heat away from the system and keep it cool, ROG uses the end-to-end vapour chamber along with a sandwiched heatsink and Tri-fan technology.
This heat is sent out near the rear hinge of the display, ensuring it’s not blowing back onto your hands, while the sides and the underneath of the laptop draw the air in and keep it flowing through. Like with most gaming systems, the fan noise is noticeable, but not overpowering when gaming; but let’s be honest, you will most likely have headphones on. When not under processing stress during gaming, you won’t hear them, and they are near silent.
The GPU perfectly complements the processor: Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5090 with a max TGP of 175W. It has 24 GB of GDDR7 onboard with DLSS 4.5. The GPU is also running Nvidia’s Max-Q technology, which is a suite of AI tools such as Advanced Optimus, sharing the GPU processing between the RTX card and the onboard graphics processing and dynamic boosting, shifting power between the CPU and GPU to keep power available when needed between both, ensuring a smooth gaming operation when in use.
Onboard the GPU is Nvidia’s tried-and-tested Reflex 2 frame-warp technology, giving you ultimate responsiveness and full ray-tracing neural rendering technology that uses AI learning models. Playing <a href="https://comicvibe.com/how-to-get-gem-sprite-in-fortnite-location-ability-and-more/” title=”How to get Gem Sprite in Fortnite: Location, ability, and more”>Fortnite, I was easily holding over 200 frames with DLSS set to quality, and it was super smooth, even at 50-68 frames in Star Citizen, which is a very hungry game on GPU and CPU; those are some solid numbers.
With all that power, they haven’t forgotten the display either: 4K 240Hz mini LED running 3840 x 2400 16:10 aspect ratio WQUXGA, and for those of us who had to Google WQUXGA like me, it stands for Wide Quad Ultra Extended Graphics Array, a fancy way of saying high def, as mentioned.
The ROG Strix SCAR 18 (2026 G835LXG-TQ468W) also utilises ROG Nebula ELMB technology that eliminates motion blur by using zoned backlight strobing for more clarity and definition. The default refresh rate is 120Hz in standard mode, with up to 240Hz when enabled. You also have an anti-glare, low-reflection display that helps enhance visual clarity and colour accuracy.
And the technology isn’t finished there; ROG has given you 270kW power in turbo mode, 95kW for the CPU and 175kW for the GPU. If you are up for a challenge and want to tinker, you can switch the system to manual mode for a massive combined 320kw, 145kw for the CPU and 175kw for the GPU of raw power.
When you are portable, the ROG Strix SCAR 18 (2026 G835LXG-TQ468W) comes with a 90Wh battery; if you’re not using the battery pack, you can fast charge with the USB Type-C cable. The hard drive onboard is my favourite type, M.2, with 1TB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD storage.
Networking hasn’t been forgotten; we all need that extra competitive advantage in the online world these days. The latest Wifi 7 technology and onboard 2.5G Ethernet card, matched with ROG’s Thunderbolt 5 ports, which provide 80 to 120 gigabytes of bidirectional bandwidth, ensuring you can extract every last drop of the Wifi 7 bandwidth.
You have three USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A ports, a 2.5 G Ethernet port, an HDMI 2.1 port, a Thunderbolt Type-C port, and an audio jack, ensuring you have enough to connect all your peripherals. To top this all off, you have an FHD+IR camera that combines high definition with infrared night-vision capabilities for low-light capture at 1080p.
ROG Strix SCAR 18 (2026 G835LXG-TQ468W) is a beast. I was trying to explain all this technology to my wife. I finished with it is better than my desktop PC in a lot of ways, which is nearly two years old, in the hope of trying to buy one, but that didn’t work; the house needs painting first- how boring. ROG expanded into gaming laptops in 2010, and you can see that heritage in this system.
The top-shelf components and LEDs have become hand in hand with gamers; a large screen and a laptop that is future-proofed, with the ability to upgrade components, really sets this apart from its competition.
