Roblox unveils Build, its new mobile-first AI game creation tool

Roblox has announced Build, a new mobile-first creation tab within the Roblox app, alongside a suite of AI-powered tools for Roblox Studio, as the company marks two decades since it launched around the idea that anyone, not just professional studios, could make a game.

The announcement was made in a joint blog post by Nick Tornow, senior vice-president of engine at Roblox, and Vlad Loktev, chief creator ecosystem officer at Roblox. “Twenty years ago, Roblox launched with a simple idea: ‘You make the game,'” the pair wrote, noting that with 132 million daily active users, the company now wants to extend that founding idea “further than we ever have.”

Build allows users to turn text prompts into a working starting point for a game directly within the mobile app — typing a request such as a cosy forest adventure with environmental obstacles, for instance, generates an initial version that can be edited, playtested and shared with friends, or published to Roblox. The tool shares a back end, underlying models and chat history with Studio, meaning creators can begin a project in Build and continue refining it in Studio, or start in Studio and check on an agent’s progress from a phone.

According to Tornow and Loktev, Build draws on a broad set of AI models, both open-nvironments, characters, visual style and sound without leaving the app. They said Roblox’s own models are trained on an unusually large set of 3D and gaming-specific data, allowing them to produce functional 3D objects and full scenes that integrate directly into existing creation tools

Testing of the new agentic tools within Build and Studio is set to begin on July 28. Select Build features, including the ability to publish games, will launch in public alpha to users in New Zealand from that date, with the company planning to expand to more creators and regions over the following months. During the alpha, Build will be available to age-verified users nine and older, while published games that clear Roblox’s safety checks will be available globally to age-verified users 16 and older. Games created through Build in alpha will go through the same extended review process as any other Roblox title before being added to the Select catalogue, and will be ranked by the same retention-based discovery system used across the platform. A basic version of Build will be free, with additional paid options aimed at power users.

Roblox was keen to stress that the changes will not alter how games are surfaced to players. “The quality of games on the homepage isn’t changing: If no one plays it — no one can find it,” Tornow and Loktev wrote, adding that discovery systems are built to highlight titles with long-term retention rather than what they termed “AI slop.”

Beyond Build, the company outlined a further set of tools due over the coming months for more experienced creators, including a playtesting agent designed to surface bugs before a game reaches players, an analytics agent that answers plain-language questions about a game’s performance without requiring creators to dig through dashboards, and an experiment agent intended to identify tests that could improve engagement, retention and monetisation.

Roblox also pointed to tools it has already introduced, including Procedural Models, which generate parametric 3D assets from a text prompt or image that creators can then reshape without manual remodelling, and Cube, its 3D foundation model, which turns prompts into game-ready objects ranging from simple props to functioning vehicles and weapons. A scene-generation model, currently in development, will allow an entire editable, playable 3D scene to be built from a single prompt, the company said.

“Together, these updates bring Roblox closer than ever to our vision where ‘You make the game.’ Let’s build,” Tornow and Loktev wrote.
