WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Attorney General’s Office announced on Tuesday that the state has reached an over $10 million settlement with an online gaming platform over child safety concerns.
Under the settlement, Roblox is required to implement stricter safeguards to ensure that users have access only to age-appropriate content and cannot have harmful contact with adults.
“Parents should not have to compete with predators and poorly designed platforms just to keep their kids safe online,” Attorney General Kris Kobach said in a news release. “This settlement puts real money, real tools, and real accountability on the table.”

As part of the settlement, Roblox will pay $9.8 million to the AG’s Office over three years and contribute $500,000 toward a three-year multimedia campaign focused on online child safety in Kansas.
Roblox has also agreed to enhance safety measures, including age verification for all users, improved parental controls and chat restrictions to prevent people from moving conversations off Roblox.
“Kansas will not accept a system in which kids can be steered into conversations with strangers and then pushed onto other apps where parents have even less visibility,” Kobach said. “Age assurance, default age-grouped chat, stronger parental locks, and limits on Robux transfers are practical steps. Combined with a dedicated law-enforcement liaison and a Kansas-focused safety campaign, this settlement gives families and investigators more of what they have been asking for.”

Additionally, the settlement requires Roblox to hire a Kansas-based law enforcement specialist to assist with regional requests, as well as to get advice from an online child safety expert on policies and initiatives that affect minor users in the region.
If Roblox fails to comply with any of the terms, the company will have to pay an additional $10 million in damages, according to the AG’s Office.
KSN has reached out to Roblox for comment and was provided the following statement:
Roblox is proud to have worked collaboratively with Attorney General Kobach and his team to reach this agreement, which builds on our ongoing mission to establish the gold standard for digital safety. This agreement – including our support for a PSA campaign and a dedicated law enforcement liaison in Kansas – serves as an important blueprint for how the technology industry and regulators can work together proactively to help protect the next generation. We have no finish line when it comes to safety, and we will continue to invest heavily in our people, processes, and technology to help protect our community.
