Roblox to introduce browser-based and offline gaming features

Roblox is preparing to make its gaming platform more accessible by letting users play experiences directly in a web browser and, eventually, without an internet connection. The company announced the upcoming features at its annual Roblox Developers Conference, outlining plans that could make it easier for players to access games across different devices and situations.

The browser-based option is scheduled to arrive by the end of 2026, while offline gaming is expected to follow in mid-2027. Roblox is also expanding the types of games its platform can support, moving beyond the 3D experiences that have traditionally defined the service.

Roblox games will be playable directly from web links

The first major change will allow players to launch Roblox experiences directly from a browser without downloading or installing the Roblox application first. The company plans to make browser-based gaming available by the end of 2026, initially supporting Google Chrome.

Under the new system, players will be able to access an Experience Details Page through a browser and start a game from there. This could make Roblox experiences easier to discover and play when users encounter links outside the platform itself. For example, a Roblox game shared through a search engine, YouTube, X or an email could potentially take users straight into the experience.

Roblox said the browser experience will initially be limited to Chrome, although it plans to bring the capability to additional browsers in the future. The move could reduce one barrier for people who discover a Roblox game but do not already have the platform’s software installed on their device.

The change also reflects Roblox’s wider effort to make its content available in more places. Rather than requiring players to start their session in the Roblox application, browser access could make experiences easier to reach from links shared across the web.

Offline play is planned for 2027

Roblox is also working on an offline gaming mode that will allow creators to offer selected experiences for solo play without an active internet connection. The company expects the feature to launch in mid-2027, although early access should become available sooner for some users who want to test it.

Individual creators will control the planned offline mode, meaning developers can decide whether their experiences support offline solo play. This approach could allow suitable games to remain playable in locations where internet access is unreliable, including during travel or in areas with weak connections.

The feature is expected to be particularly useful for experiences that do not depend heavily on live multiplayer interaction. Games designed around solo progression or activities that can function without constantly communicating with Roblox’s online services may be better suited to the system.

Roblox is also working to allow creators to distribute their experiences as standalone applications on mobile devices, PCs, and consoles. The initiative is part of the company’s broader “Play Roblox Everywhere” strategy, which aims to expand how and where users can access content created with Roblox.

Standalone apps could give creators another way to reach players beyond the traditional Roblox experience. Instead of requiring every game to be accessed solely through the main platform, developers will have more opportunities to package their creations for different types of hardware.

Roblox expands beyond its traditional 3D games

Alongside its plans for browser and offline gaming, Roblox is expanding its development engine’s capabilities. The company is adding support for new interfaces and game structures that could make the platform better suited to experiences outside its familiar 3D format.

Roblox has traditionally been strongly associated with 3D games and virtual worlds, but the company now wants creators to have more freedom to build different kinds of experiences. Its expanded engine capabilities will support 2D games and puzzle titles, potentially opening the platform to developers who have not previously considered Roblox a suitable place for their projects.

The company is also increasing support for turn-based and asynchronous multiplayer games. These formats let players participate at different times rather than requiring everyone to be online simultaneously, making them different from the real-time multiplayer experiences common across Roblox.

The broader range of supported game types could significantly change the variety of experiences available on the platform. Developers may be able to experiment with genres and mechanics that were previously less suited to Roblox’s technology. At the same time, players could see a wider mix of games alongside the platform’s established 3D experiences.

Taken together, the announcements point towards Roblox becoming less dependent on a single way of playing. Browser access is expected to make games easier to launch from around the web, offline support could extend access to areas with limited connectivity, and new development tools may encourage creators to build experiences in more formats. The company is expected to introduce these capabilities gradually as development and testing continue.
