Roblox introduced a new feature that allows creators to create avatar items with lighting effects, and players almost immediately started using it in ways the company didn’t expect.
The new Emissive Items feature was introduced on August 31st as part of a pilot program for creators who make and sell items on the Roblox Marketplace. They can now add emissive parts to various avatar items, such as accessories and gear.
Interest was overwhelming. In less than 24 hours, more than 1.500 creators signed up, even though Roblox had originally planned to keep applications open until September 16. Due to the overwhelming response, the company made the feature available to all eligible creators just three days later.
The first items created using the new feature have already arrived on the Marketplace. Players can now choose from a variety of glowing accessories, from tiaras with sparkling gems to different auras that they can add to their avatars.
However, Roblox players and creators are already known for finding new ways to use the tools available. Earlier this year, the community discovered how to use the Accessory Adjustment Tool to change the appearance of avatars’ faces and create combinations that were previously not possible. One popular effect was glowing eyes.
A similar situation occurred with Emissive Items. Creators immediately began experimenting with the new feature, and in just three days, more than 900 items with luminous elements were published on the Marketplace.
Roblox, however, has already had to respond to some of the uses of the new feature. The most popular Emissive Item at the moment is a simple glowing aura that envelops the avatar’s entire body, although that use was clearly not what the company originally had in mind.
Roblox explained on DevForum that objects that cover the entire body or are too large, especially when using maximum brightness, can interfere with gameplay. Therefore, the company will introduce limits on the intensity and area of the lighting effect, as well as a check that will automatically indicate whether a particular object meets the requirements.
Individual game developers will also be able to turn off lighting effects for their games. This could be especially useful in games where light from an avatar could reveal the player’s position or make them an easier target.
This isn’t the first time Roblox has had to adapt its tools after the community started using them in unexpected ways. Creators are quick to adopt new features, but they’re almost as quick to use them for things they weren’t originally intended for.
That’s the somewhat ironic part of Roblox’s message to the community. The company noted that such open launches depend on users using the new features as intended, and thanked them for helping to keep it that way.
Judging by the early days of Emissive Items, it seems Roblox will once again have to set limits only after players and creators show how far they can push the new feature.
