A Japanese cosplayer named Puraru (@/rairuki79) from X (formerly Twitter) shared a photo of a blue-haired maid from Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-. In the photo, Pururu is dressed as Rem, wearing a costume reminiscent of a Halloween-themed witch. The costume is almost the same as Rem’s black and white maid outfit in the movie, but it features a purple skirt, cloak, and boots. She also wears an oversized witch’s hat and is posed against a darkly lit background meant to evoke a spooky forest atmosphere.

Rem herself is not a caster, but she is not exactly human either. Rem from “Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World” is a twin demon maid who works at the Roswaal mansion. Ironically, Rem initially hated witches to the point that she would kill anyone who smelled a witch on the spot, including poor Natsuki Subaru. Thankfully, Subaru was brought back to life with his “return by death” ability. After saving Rem from the monster in Eriol Forest, his hostile feelings toward Subaru turn into love. Although Subaru does not have romantic feelings like Rem, he remains loyal to the “hero”. Although not present in standard form, Rem is able to manifest pink energy horns from her head whenever she enters demon mode for battle.
The most popular girls in “Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World” are Rem and the half-elf Emilia. During Season 1, Rem’s official body pillow was delayed due to “unforeseen demand” and shipped on September 9, 2016, instead of the planned August 26 release date. Rem also took the top spot in a survey conducted by the series’ official X account for fans asking, “Which heroine do you want to be spoiled by?” After collecting approximately 30,000 votes, Rem won with over 54% of the vote. Emilia came in second place with 21%. Rem’s twin demon sister Ram came in third place with 12%. Last but not least, Beatrice, the 400-year-old child, came in 4th place with 11% of the votes.

The light novel by author Tappei Nagatsuki and illustrator Shinichiro Otsuka has been released in English by Yen Press.
