The fans have been waiting impatiently for the return of “Reasonable Doubt.” That wait ended this week as the series dropped the first three episodes of season four, and fans made it the number one show streaming on Hulu!
The series wasted no time getting straight to the drama.
THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE FIRST THREE EPISODES OF “REASONABLE DOUBT” SEASON 4.
The season premiere picked up where season three left off: Monica (Brandee Evans) walking into the office of Jax Stewart’s new law firm and opening fire on Jax (Emayatzy Corinealdi), Daniel (Tim Jo), and Lewis (McKinley Freeman), striking Jax.
Cut to three weeks later and Jax is still in a coma as her family, friends and colleagues try to figure out how to help her and how to move forward.
Fans didn’t have to wait too long to see where the show will go. At the end of episode one, we find out that Jax has been moved out of ICU and has woken up (whew!).
Corinealdi told On The Red Carpet that Jax’s journey after the shooting is a rough one.
“It’s very hard for a woman like Jax, who’s used to being in control, on her feet doing what needs to be done. So she is sat down and she can’t do anything in the way that she is used to,” she said. “By the time we get to episode two, we do see that, ok she’s out of the hospital but may be too fast.”
“This really transforms her, you know, for the better or for the worse, time will tell as the season goes on. But she’s definitely going to find herself in very much unfamiliar territory and dealing with things and ghosts in the past and, you know, really all of the trauma that she’s kind of dealt with up to this point, it’s all coming to a head.”
As Jax recovers and tries to deal with the pain from her injuries as well the stress of trying to get back to work, she turns to pain pills.
“Addiction is not something that she ever sees coming,” Corinealdi continued. “So when she finds herself in that space… it’s a huge blow to her reality in a lot of ways. She tries very hard to distance herself from that truth.”
“Reasonable Doubt” creator Raamla Mohamed Hunter notes they touched on addiction in season three in a different lens (through Kyle Bary’s character Ozzie). But having her main character struggle with narcotics use is a story she wanted to tell.
“I think some people still have this idea that addiction can’t happen to them, they can’t have that experience, you know? And I think Jax is no different. She thinks, ‘I’m not my father, I’m not an addict.’ And that denial is what kind of makes it worse. So we’ll see her have to take accountability and also have to understand who she is and what she’s kind of inherited and how she is going to deal with that,” teased Mohamed Hunter.
Corey Cash, played by Morris Chestnut, is back this season to help keep the newly formed Stewart Firm afloat as Jax is hospitalized and then during her recovery. He meets with Jax’s client, Eric Cropper, played by R&B singer Durrell “Tank” Babbs, who is going through a fight of his own with his soon-to-be ex-wife Brooke, played by Taylor Polidore Williams.. And as we find out, things go VERY awry.
“I think one thing I love about season four is the audience will get to see Jax behave in a way that they haven’t really seen her behave before and I think she’s doing an incredible job,” Chestnut said.
Meagan Good plays Regina Harris, the new district attorney, who is prosecuting Monica for shooting Jax.
“I think she brings a kind of warmth to the DA character and strength,” said Mohamed Hunter.
Corinealdi hints at some friction between Jax and Regina.
“We’ve had some fantastic actors in past seasons as district attorneys, so to see a Black woman playing that role, she is going against her in that way. It’s also a lot of fun because Jax is very territorial.”
“This season’s really going to put you through the wringer and it’s quite a roller coaster,” said Tim Jo. “It’s going to be a pretty big adventure of a season. And on top of that, the case that we’re tackling this year is the biggest that we’ve done, too.”
“It’s intense. It’s like, so intense but so good somehow,” added Angela Grovey who plays Krystal. “Season four is unbelievable. It’s unbelievable.”
The first three episodes of “Reasonable Doubt” are streaming on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+. New episodes will drop weekly on Tuesdays.
