‘Raucous and Loud’: Lumen Field named No. 1 stadium in the NFL

The reigning Super Bowl champion Seahawks now have another title to their name, as USA Today ranked Lumen Field the No. 1 stadium in the NFL out of 30 stadiums.

The ranking cited Seattle’s 12th Man as having the most “raucous and loud” settings in the league and unbeatable views of the Seattle skyline from several viewpoints within the stadium.

Built in 2002, Lumen Field has a capacity of 68,740, which ranks around the middle of the pack in the NFL. But what it lacks in size, the fans more than make up for.

Seahawks home record, playoff dominance underscore the Lumen Field advantage

Lumen Field also received high marks for its roof, which covers roughly 70% of spectators with curved metal canopies during the rain-heavy fall and winter months.

It’s only fitting that the NFL’s top-ranked stadium belongs to its most boisterous fanbase, the 12th Man, who bring deafening noise that rattles opponents. The roof wasn’t just built for practicality; it was designed to reflect fan noise directly down to the field.

In 2005, Seattle set a franchise and single-game record for forcing 11 false start penalties against the New York Giants. Later in 2011, fans generated seismic activity registering roughly 2.0 on the Richter scale in response to Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch’s 67-yard touchdown run in the playoffs, and it has since been dubbed the “Beast Quake.”

Since then, Seattle has been known to have one of the loudest and most die-hard fan bases in the league, which certainly plays a role in the team’s 140-68 record at home and 12-2 performance in the playoffs.

Lumen Field also played a starring role in the recent FIFA World Cup as one of 11 host venues, drawing a massive number of local and international fans to the stadium for six nearly sold-out matches.

Roughly 401,000 fans attended World Cup games at Lumen Field, with tens of thousands more packing nearby bars and restaurants surrounding the stadium. Seattle proved it was equipped to handle the biggest sporting event it’s hosted in city history, as a study found Seattle to be the best city in the U.S. to host the World Cup.

Only 1 Seahawks division rival came close

An NFC West foe found its way into the top three as the Los Angeles Rams’ SoFi Stadium was ranked as the No. 3 stadium in the NFL, despite the “nightmare traffic” in Inglewood.

SoFi, which is also shared with the Chargers, received a favorable ranking for its futuristic architecture, featuring a translucent roof and a double-sided Infinity Screen that circles above the field.

The rest of the Seahawks’ division rivals did not fare as well, with the Arizona Cardinals’ State Farm Stadium and the San Francisco 49ers’ Levi’s Stadium being ranked at No. 18 and No. 24, respectively.

The main knock on Levi’s Stadium is its lack of “architectural panache” and its roughly 50-mile distance from the heart of San Francisco, making gameday commutes less than ideal.
