The long-gestating reboot of the Power Rangers television universe has officially hit a dead end at Disney+. According to a report from Deadline, the proposed live-action series—which was originally spearheaded by Hasbro’s Entertainment One (eOne) with executive producer Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F*ing World) and showrunner Jenny Klein (Daisy Jones & The Six)—is no longer moving forward at the streamer.

The decision comes after years of development behind closed doors, marking another high-profile casualty as Hasbro reassesses its media output and streaming partnerships.

Hasbro originally acquired the Power Rangers franchise from Saban Brands in 2018 for $522 million, aiming to build a interconnected cinematic universe spanning feature films and serial television. Entwistle was brought on board in late 2020 to oversee the creative overhaul, with Klein joining as showrunner in 2022.

However, following Hasbro’s sale of eOne’s film and TV assets to Lionsgate and subsequent internal shifts toward leaner licensing models, the live-action reboot struggled to find a creative direction that aligned with Disney+’s evolving streaming strategy.

While the current incarnation at Disney+ is officially scrapped, Hasbro isn’t placing the Ranger Nation in permanent storage. Hasbro is actively exploring a fresh creative direction with a new partner to develop a reimagined take on the iconic 90s franchise, though no new creative team or distributor has been finalized.

    • The Project Status: The Jonathan Entwistle and Jenny Klein pitch is completely dead at Disney+.
    • The Future Search: Hasbro retains full ownership of the IP and is actively shopping the franchise to new broadcast and streaming partners.

Bringing Power Rangers back into the mainstream requires a tricky tonal balance: honoring the campy roots of the 1993 original while delivering the narrative depth modern streaming audiences expect. D+ pulling the plug shows that even decades-old, multi-billion-dollar nostalgia brands aren’t guaranteed a greenlight in today’s cautious streaming environment. For Hasbro, finding a partner willing to invest heavily in teenagers with attitude remains the ultimate quest.
