BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) —Free Comic Book Day is a yearly event taking place on the first Saturday of May in which local comic shops receive a series of exclusive new issues to hand out completely for free. At Captain Comics in Boise, they say it’s also a community building event. Allowing fans of all ages to bond over their shared interests.
“It’s a way to give back to the community and get excited about the new reads coming out this summer,” said Nikki Emerson, the manager at Captain Comics, who has worked a dozen Free Comic Book Days.
Some of the releases this year include a double feature of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Minecraft, Dungeon Crawler Carl making a comic book debut, Sonic the Hedgehog in the same universe as DC superheroes and so much more.
The folks at Captain Comics are allowing each person to claim five comics each. But, if they come dressed up as their favorite character, they are able to tack on an extra two on top of that.
It’s also a time for people who may be new to comic books. Since the issues are free, it gives someone a place to start.
“Free Comic Book Day is a really nice way for people who have never read comics before to just get into it for free,” said Lily Elsethagen, who will be working their sixth Free Comic Book Day. “Who can say no to free?”
The shop opens their doors at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 2 and the event will go until 6:00 p.m.
