Kang Heon, chairperson of the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service, who worked as a popular music critic and myeongri scholar, has died aged 64.

According to people in cultural circles on the 20th, Kang died that afternoon. The specific cause of death has not been disclosed.

Born in Busan in 1962, Kang graduated from Seoul National University’s Department of Korean Language and Literature and went on to study musicology at the same university’s graduate school. Kang initially dreamed of becoming a novelist, but later built a distinctive career spanning film, music, live performance, cultural criticism and other fields.

Kang began working in the film industry. As part of the independent film collective Jangsangotmae, Kang took part in producing works including ‘Oh! Dreamland’ and ‘The Eve of the Strike,’ and also wrote the screenplays for the commercial films ‘When Adam Opens His Eyes’ and ‘Jungle Story,’ as well as the TV drama ‘The Third Theater.’

Music criticism was the field that brought Kang’s name to public attention. After a junior colleague asked Kang to write ‘On Kim Hyun-sik: From Acoustic Guitar to Blue Note’ about singer Kim Hyun-sik, Kang embarked in earnest on a career as a popular music critic.

Kang was active alongside fellow critic Lim Jin-mo in the 1990s. Recalling Kang, Lim said, “We worked as a duo for a long time in the 1990s,” and recalled that at the time people in popular culture circles would say, “Korean pop was Kang Heon, and pop was Lim Jin-mo.”

Kang and colleagues produced cultural quarterly magazines such as ‘Yegam,’ ‘Sangsang’ and ‘Review,’ and Kang taught the history of popular music for about 20 years at several universities, including Hongik University, Sungkonghoe University, Dankook University and Sungkyunkwan University.

Kang also expanded into stage and live performance. In addition to concerts such as ‘Freedom’ and the ‘Folk 30th Anniversary Festival,’ Kang took part in producing musical theater works including ‘An Endless Song’ and ‘Cheonbyeon Salon.’

Through writing and teaching, Kang viewed popular music not simply as a fad but as a lens through which to understand society and history. In ‘The Moment of Subversion and Reversal,’ published in 2015, Kang explored major moments in music history—from songs of the Japanese colonial period to Elvis Presley—alongside the social context of their time. In ‘Kang Heon’s History of Korean Popular Culture,’ published the following year, Kang traced the formation and transformation of popular culture amid the currents of modern and contemporary Korean history.

After coming through a major crisis, Kang also became deeply immersed in myeongri. At 42, Kang suffered an aortic dissection and fell into a coma for 23 days. After waking, Kang began studying myeongri and published ‘Myeongri: Reading Destiny’ in 2015.

Kang later served as president of the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation and as the fifth chair of the Korean Federation of Regional Cultural Foundations, among other roles, and was appointed chairperson of the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service last December. Beginning in film and relentlessly expanding into popular music criticism and teaching, live performance, writing, myeongri and cultural administration, Kang died at the age of 64.
