On Sunday, the New England Patriots were down a trio of wide receivers: A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs, and Mack Hollins. To make matters worse, for the offense, tight end Hunter Henry also left the game with a foot injury and did not return.
With all of the lost offensive firepower, the Patriots needed a depth receiver to step up. Pop Douglas did exactly that, leading all pass catchers with 76 yards and catching all three of his targets, including a touchdown.
DeMario Douglas Brings the Second-Half ‘Pop’
All three of DeMario Douglas’s receptions came in the second half and helped result in scoring drives for New England.
Douglas’s first reception started with a Drake Maye fumble, but ended with a 26-yard reception that brought New England’s offense deep into Dolphins territory. Later that drive, on 4th-and-two, Douglas got just enough to pick up a key first down.
The drive would end with a Drake Maye ‘Rajon-Rondo’-esque rushing touchdown that gave New England a 17-13 lead.
The Patriots’ next offensive drive began at midfield following a Kevin Byard III interception, and ended with Douglas taking a Drake Maye pass 48 yards for a catch-and-run touchdown that gave New England a 24-13 lead.
Douglas’s touchdown was his fourth on the season, which is a new career high for the fourth-year receiver.
Looking Ahead
New England has two tough games remaining against two elite NFC North offenses before its Week 11 Bye.
Next Sunday, they will welcome the (5-3) Green Bay Packers to Foxborough, and the following week will be playing in Germany against the (5-2) Detroit Lions.
The Patriots will hopefully have at least A.J. Brown back for these two matchups, but if New England’s group of pass catchers remains the same, Douglas’s career performance in Miami showed that he is more than capable of producing when the team needs him most.
