The Pokémon franchise is returning to cinemas with Pokémon: Wild Card, a new feature-length anime film scheduled for release worldwide in 2027.

The movie was announced during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco, where a first-look teaser and visual were also revealed. The film will centre on a Pokémon Trading Card Game player and his partner, Mimikyu.

The teaser introduces the player wearing a yellow hoodie resembling Mimikyu’s distinctive appearance. Mimikyu, a Ghost/Fairy-type Pokémon first introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon, disguises itself as Pikachu beneath a yellow rag while keeping its true appearance hidden.

CloverWorks will produce the animation, with Katsuhiko Kitada serving as director and Akemi Hayashi handling character design.

Kitada previously worked on anime projects including The First Slam Dunk, Attack on Titanand Naruto: Shippuden. Hayashi’s credits include Banana Fishand Lazarus.

Pokémon: Wild Card will be the first Pokémon feature film since 2020’s Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle. That film received a theatrical release in Japan before arriving worldwide on Netflix in 2021.

The most recent Pokémon movie to receive a worldwide theatrical release was 2018’s Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us,which had a limited release outside Japan through Fathom Events.

The announcement comes during a year marking the Pokémon franchise’s 30th anniversary. The series is also scheduled to expand with Winds and Waves, described as the 10th generation of Pokémon titles, in 2027.

Further details about Pokémon: Wild Card, including its specific release date and wider story, have not been provided as of yet.
