There’s no ignoring the outcry on social media right now surrounding the looming all-digital future. With Sony announcing that they’re cutting physical discs from 2028, and the news that Project Helix, XBOX’s next console, won’t have a disc drive, there’s a real fear amongst the gaming community that ownership of games could become a thing of the past
Well, a growing collection of PlayStation fans is seemingly rallying together to cancel their PlayStation Plus subscriptions, as a means of protest against Sony’s decision to scrap physical media
PlayStation Plus: “We’re Sorry To See You Go”
Tons of fans online are banding together in a bid to get users to cancel their PlayStation Plus subscription, with the aim of sending a message to Sony that an all-digital future isn’t one they want to live in—it’s always been said to speak with your wallet!
One user in particular, Pyo on X, has even gone as far as to detail exactly how to cancel PS Plus, whilst ending on a rallying call for the community: “Speak up today or lose ownership forever!”
Keep spreading the word and don’t let SONY get away with this!If you want to make sure your voice gets heard for real for playstation, unsubscribe to Playstation plus! How to do it:1. Web Browser:Account Management → Subscription → Cancel Subscription2. PS5 Console… pic.twitter.com/jsqa0Gybnb

Underneath the post, numerous users have shared screenshots of their cancellations, with many opting to deactivate their renewing subscription. It’s incredibly clear that a large portion of the community is upset with the decision to kill off physical media, and for good reason, though it’s a slightly complicated tale
Generally speaking, there’s a real fear that, should games go entirely digital, fans would lose ownership over their product. With Sony just recently removing 500 films from people’s digital libraries, it begs the question: who’s to say they won’t do the same with digitally bought <a href="https://comicvibe.com/5-video-games-from-2004-that-changed-gaming-forever/" title="5 Video Games From 2004 That Changed Gaming Forever”>video games, too?

In fact, that exact situation has already happened in the past. For example, it’s currently impossible to digitally purchase Marvel’s Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2, as well as Deadpool 2013, with the discs being the only way to play them. This is all due to the titles being delisted because Activision didn’t renew the Marvel license
It’s a very real possibility, and it’s not one gamers want to see become the norm. Then there’s the matter of game sharing and the second-hand market, which tons of gamers rely on for a cheaper entry into the hobby. Force them to the digital store, which often markets at increased prices, and thousands of fans are due to be priced out, especially with the continually rising costs
Whether the protest of PS Plus will have an impact on Sony remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt that fan trust and respect for the PlayStation brand might be at an all-time low. Will you be cancelling your PS Plus subscription? Share your thoughts in the official Insider Gaming Discord Server
