Having always been favoured by the Grand Theft Auto bosses, PlayStation’s looming console woes might be catastrophic for Sony as the Take-Two Interactive CEO claims streaming is the future for the series.

Grand Theft Auto VI was long touted to be the first PS6 game, but misaligned release windows and a troublesome next-gen console development time have seen the blockbuster game release first.

Still, the PS5 Pro has been dubbed as the best console to enjoy the fullGTA 6experience by Rockstar.

However, Take-Two Interactive now fears that the RAM shortages that could cause even more next-gen PlayStationdelays will be bad for business and could even see streaming platforms overtake it.

Take-Two CEO predicts streaming games will be the norm in three years

Speaking in the recent Take-Two earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick has been dishing out some damning indictments on the gaming industry, even doubling down on the disc-less, digital future of game ownership.

But when it comes to platforms, Zelnick claimed that the next-gen consoles not being ready is “not a good thing”.

Instead, he’s stoking favour into streaming platforms, which are hot on the tail of GTA 6.

“With the advent of streaming – which we really do believe is around the corner in terms of having something that’s low latency, and really works well for consumers – machines that weren’t game machines before will become game machines,” he said.

“If you believe in streaming, to be clear, we really do – and I’m happy to put a timeline on it. I think we’ll be in commercial streaming mode in three years, and by commercial I mean low latency – that can have 10x the effective install base.

“That doesn’t mean we’re going to 10x our revenue, and we wouldn’t project that we would, because obviously your avid consumers already have access to video game machines.

“But I do think it creates great opportunity for titles that are broadly desirable even outside of core markets, and we do have titles like that, obviously.”

This all comes after a new report suggests that the PlayStation 6 could be pushed back to 2028 as the ‘RAMpocalypse’ has taken a turn for the worst.

A recent statement coming from DigiTimes claimed that the ‘big three’ RAM suppliers are completely sold out throughout 2027 – thanks to multi-year deals with colossal AI data centres – leaving consoles hot out of luck.

The three suppliers, Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron, have been long-time partners with PlayStation to power the current-gen consoles, but now look to have favoured consistent customers, rather than hardware companies who need plentiful one-time orders.

So with a potential release delay, streaming platforms are hot on the approach.

Most notably, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna, and Netflix Games are among those platforms where GTA 6 could be best played.
