PlayStation 5 emulator SharpEmu is following the same trajectory of PlayStation 4 emulation

With PlayStation 4 emulation advancing at a rapidly thanks to the incredible efforts of the ShadPS4 development team, it was only a matter of time before other developers would begin working on PlayStation 5 emulation. Funnily enough, emulation of the current-generation system is following a similar trajectory, being fueled by emulating a console exclusive, the remake of a game originally developed by FromSoftware: Demon’s Souls

SharpEmu is the name of an experimental PlayStation 5 emulator whose current status and development progress is tracked publicly on GitHub. “SharpEmu is an emulator project currently in its early stages of development. Our goal is not to emulate PS4 games, as there is already an excellent emulator dedicated to that platform: ShadPS4,” says the emulator’s official description

As it’s still in the early stages of development, SharpEmu cannot run any games yet, but its current status is nonetheless very promising. The C#-based emulator can currently load the eboot.bin of real games, execute native CPU instructions, and partially handle kernel-related functionality. However, several critical components are still missing

The software’s current capabilities include loading eboot.bin and .elf files, executing native CPU instructions, reading basic game metadata like title and version, loading system modules via prx and sys_module, and providing partial support for some kernel functions. Furthermore, the framework handles Fiber and AMPR exports, PlayGo scenarios, initial loading of game files, shader and resource submits with AGC initial steps, and video outputs in select titles, allowing some games to successfully reach the sceVideoOut and AGC stages.

To put the above in simpler terms, the SharpEmu PlayStation 5 emulator is a translation layer, much like ShadPS4, that enables PC components like the CPU and GPU to run games. This is made possible by the PS5 hardware architecture being very close to current PC hardware components, unlike systems like the PS3, whose complex Cell architecture made it very difficult not only to develop for but also to emulate cleanly

As of now, the SharpEmu emulator was only tested with a handful of games, including Poppy Playtime Chapter 1, Silent Hill: The Short Message, Dreaming Sarah, and Demon’s Souls. The latter two are the most promising, as the emulator renders real textures for the first, and boots the second into a video loop. Bloodborne PC emulation also began with ShadPS4 barely booting the game before delivering 60 FPS gameplay, even on older GPUs, so no matter how insignificant this may sound to the average user, this holds incredible promise. You can check out the remake developed by Bluepoint Games booting on the emulator in the video below courtesy of MagnumSkyWolf.

Don’t Expect to Play Grand Theft Auto VI on PC This November

As the real value for most users will be the option of playing the handful of PlayStation 5 exclusives on PC, some may expect to be able to play Grand Theft Auto VI on PC PC release. However, even if SharpEmu progresses quickly, there’s no chance emulation will reach the accuracy level required to run what is set to be one of the most demanding open-world games of the current console generation

As such, you would do well to keep expectations in check. However, the future prospect of being able to play Demon’s Souls on PC and other exclusives like Ghost of Yotei, Marvel’s Wolverine, and God of War Laufey in the future is definitely exciting, as they won’t be officially ported any time soon, if ever
