PlatinumGames has offered a few words about Nintendo Switch 2 as well as the future of Bayonetta.
PlatinumGames CEO Atsushi Inaba was recently taking part in a joint discussion with Shift Up’s Kim Hyung Tae. For those who missed the news, the companies recently announced a collaboration which will bring special Bayonetta costumes to Stellar Blade in time for the Nintendo Switch 2 launch in November.
At one point of the discussion, Kim was talking about the challenges of working on the port and optimizing for docked / handheld modes. Famitsu asked if this is something Inaba can relate to, and while he acknowledged potential challenges, he did say that PlatinumGames doesn’t have a title on Nintendo Switch 2 yet. That said, he believes the console has “so much potential.”
Right after that, there was talk about Bayonetta and the series’ future. Inaba naturally wasn’t going to reveal anything substantial right there, but teased that he wants “to expand her as a character and broaden her world.” He also asked fans to “wait to see exactly what shape that will take.”
Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya left PlatinumGames at the end of 2023. Kamiya believes that the series will continue, but we haven’t actually heard from the studio about the franchise’s future since his departure. These comments suggest that PlatinumGames will indeed be continuing on with Bayonetta – which will hopefully bring about a new entry on Nintendo Switch 2 at some point.
Here’s our translation of the Famitsu interview:
So Inaba-san, there must be lots of parts that you relate to?
Inaba: Yes, I think it’s challenging. We have yet to release a game on Nintendo Switch 2, but I think there is so much potential. There are challenges in bringing various things to reality, but it’s a piece of hardware that can really widen a player’s enjoyment.
Kim: Bayonetta is approaching 17, but even looking at it now, I think it’s a wonderfully beautiful design. And the game really hasn’t lost any of its freshness.
Inaba: I think Eve from Stellar Blade is heading in the same direction.
Kim: I’ll try my best.
Inaba: And we need to keep it up until Bayonetta 10 (laughs).
Kim: That’s very important that you do.
In relation to Bayonetta, has PlantinumGames decided what its next move will be?
Inaba: Well… I can’t really answer that at the moment (laughs). As for Bayonetta, I strongly feel that I want to expand her as a character and broaden her world. Please wait to see exactly what shape that will take.
Even waiting for the next game…?
Inaba: I’m sorry, but ‘no comment’ (laughs).
Kim: I am truly looking forward to it so much! We’ll be talking off-the-record after this interview, so everyone please just hurry up and go home (laughs).
After Stellar Blade, Bayonetta’s next appearance will actually be in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. We have more on that here.
