Marvel’s new Midnight Universe isn’t holding back on the nightmares, and Spider-Man is getting the most radical transformation of all.

Marvel Comics has detailed the creative direction for Midnight Spider-Man #1, written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson (Infernal Hulk) with art by Scie Tronc. Set within the newly unveiled, horror-infused Midnight Universe, the series asks “what if more spider than man?” as Peter Parker is subjected to sinister Oscorp genetic experiments that mutate him into a terrifying, half-human, half-arachnid hybrid struggling to retain his humanity.

    A Monstrous Origin

In this dark alternate timeline, Oscorp defense contractors scour New York security feeds for an escaped biological subject—a young Peter Parker mutated into a monstrous spider-human hybrid. Forced into the shadows, Peter must embrace terrifying powers and physical horrors to wage a desperate war against the corporate empire that destroyed his life.

Johnson has spent the last few years mastering visceral, body-horror storytelling at Marvel. Stripping Peter Parker of his friendly-neighborhood safety nets to turn his classic bite into a tragic, David Cronenberg-style transformation gives Midnight Spider-Man a terrifying edge. It’s an unsettling, boundary-pushing reinvention that promises to be a standout anchor for the entire Midnight imprint.
