Philippine officials are set to meet with executives of online gaming platform Roblox in Singapore on Thursday to discuss measures to protect Filipino children from harmful activities on the platform, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said on Wednesday.
DICT Secretary Henry Aguda said the Philippine delegation will include representatives from the National Bureau of Investigation, the House of Representatives and the Senate, among others.
“Tomorrow, we will speak with them directly in Singapore to ask what has happened to the two things [they] promised,” Aguda told Super Radyo dzBB in an interview on Wednesday.
Aguda was alluding to two measures that Roblox has yet to fully implement: linking its user verification system to the Philippine national digital ID and establishing an office in the Philippines.
The DICT chief said Roblox has already complied with three of the DICT’s five demands, including 1) default parental controls, 2) monitoring chats for violent tendencies, and 3) classifying games according to age groups.
The meeting comes amid calls for stricter regulation of Roblox following the fatal shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla earlier expressed support for imposing a total ban on Roblox, saying the platform was the only one that had a link to the dark web.
“We are pushing for a total ban on Roblox… Roblox is the only one in particular that has a link to the dark web,” Remulla said.
On Aug. 18, two students were killed while at least six others were injured in a shooting at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University.
In March, Roblox expressed its commitment to maintaining the safety of children, including its Filipino users, on the platform.
The company said “advanced safeguards and robust safety policies” were already in place to protect its players.
“We have filters designed to block the sharing of personal information, our chat features don’t allow user-to-user image or video sharing, and age checks are required before anyone has access to chat,” Roblox said.
Roblox said it also uses age checks and multiple layers of protection to help keep children and teenagers safe on the platform.
“Those same checks are also used to limit kids and teens to only chatting with others of similar age by default,” the company said.
“Our approach includes multiple layers of protection: advanced AI detection systems, dedicated teams who constantly monitor for critical harms, user reporting tools, and ongoing collaboration with law enforcement and safety organizations,” it added.— MCG, GMA News
