The PlayStation Portal now allows owners to cloud stream purchased digital PS5 games without Remote Play. Some PS Plus Premium subscribers use the feature to avoid buying a console entirely. Unfortunately, likely due to a technical snafu, popular titles, including Ghost of Yōtei, became inaccessible.

    Portal problems

PlayStation Lifestyle noticed a rash of Reddit posts with complaints that began around August 7th. GAME_ANALYTICA highlighted how an error message would pop up when trying to play PS5 games like Binding of Isaac. The PS Portal gaming handheld told the player that the release was no longer available to stream.

Oblivion Remastered and Madden NFL 27 were among the other impacted titles. For users who possess consoles, the PS Remote Play alternative was apparently unaffected.

As is often the case, contacting PlayStation for help wasn’t a reassuring experience. An agent informed dingofromspace that Ghost of Yōtei had been removed from the catalog of cloud streamable games. Sony does not guarantee that any candidate will indefinitely support the feature. Regardless, Redditors found it odd that so many selections would disappear on a weekend without warning.

In fact, it now seems that a glitch caused the frustration. Several players updated their posts to report that they could once again enjoy their purchases. Nevertheless, the incident raises further doubts about Sony’s total embrace of digital gaming.

    Cloud gaming concerns

Buyers chose a PlayStation Portal knowing it couldn’t boot games from storage or physical media. Still, even the PS5 will soon become more vulnerable to network outages and marketplace issues. In early 2028, Sony plans to stop printing Blu-ray discs for new releases. Critics argue that relying on servers for access to purchases threatens ownership rights.

The storage and memory shortage may also inflate the price of the PS6 and the rumored PS6 handheld. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick recently suggested that cloud gaming was a solution to rising costs. Yet, the latest Portal problems show how susceptible streaming-oriented hardware is to glitches and downtime.
