Park Eun-bin’s ‘Spooky In Love’ and ‘Agent Kim Reactivated’ also makes the global top 10
Netflix Korea’s romantic comedy series “Our Sticky Love” has topped Netflix’s global non-English TV chart just days after its premiere, even as controversy surrounding Ahn Ha-young’s family history cast a shadow over the show.
The 12-part series ranked No. 1 for the Aug. 10-16 period, recording 7.5 million views and 88 million hours viewed The series premiered on Aug. 7
Starring Jung Hae-in and Ahn, “Our Sticky Love” follows Ko Eun-sae (Ahn), an amnesiac prosecutor, and Jang Tae-ha (Jung), a boxing coach who claims to be her boyfriend. Forced to navigate a life together, the pair develops a connection as they uncover secrets surrounding their shared past.
The show’s strong performance, however, comes amid controversy surrounding Ahn’s family history that erupted shortly after the series premiered. She has faced backlash over allegations that her great-grandfather was linked to a group of pro-Japanese collaborators during Japan’s 1910-45 colonial rule of Korea.
Several of Ahn’s past comments about her family background on television programs have resurfaced, including her Aug. 7 appearance on KBS’ variety show “Problem Child in House.” During the program, Ahn said her great-grandfather had opened a Western-style clinic in Hanyang, the former name of Seoul, and had treated Emperor Gojong. She also said her grandfather, father and older sister are doctors, making hers a four-generation family of physicians.
Online speculation soon identified Ahn’s great-grandfather as Ahn Sang-ho, a doctor who practiced during Japan’s colonial rule of Korea. The controversy has focused in part on Ahn’s repeated public references to her great-grandfather after his alleged involvement with a pro-Japanese organization came to light.
Meanwhile, other Korean series also appeared on Netflix’s global non-English TV chart. TvN’s “Spooky In Love,” starring Park Eun-bin, ranked third with 2.7 million views and 28.3 million hours viewed. SBS’ global hit “Agent Kim Reactivated” came in ninth, recording 1.4 million views and 15 million hours viewed during the same period. Netflix calculates views by dividing the total number of hours watched by a title’s total running time.
