Otakon, one of the longest-running celebrations of East Asian media and fandom in the United States, is back in Washington, D.C. this weekend, ready to fill the Walter E. Washington Convention Center with costumes, music and wall-to-wall fandom. The three-day event runs Friday, July 31 through Sunday, August 2 and brings cosplay contests, panels, concerts and a packed dealers and artist floor to downtown.

According to Otakon, the 2026 lineup includes featured presenters, concerts, a formal ball and family-friendly programming, as well as an outdoor Matsuri to kick things off on Thursday. The convention’s registration page also notes hotel room blocks and on-site services for attendees.

Washington’s convention authority is already flagging the kind of crowds fans should expect. Events DC reported that Otakon drew about 46,000 people in 2024, a figure that includes staff, vendors and press along with paid members. That turnout has made Otakon one of the capital’s biggest summer conventions, and organizers advise arriving early for panels and autograph lines.

Who You’ll See And What They’ll Do

Otakon’s guest pages highlight voice actors, Japanese creators, idol acts and VTubers alongside workshops, cosplay competitions and evening concerts. The program is set up to offer something for longtime fans and newcomers alike, with panels that range from industry deep dives to beginner-friendly sessions. For a full list of performers and appearances, see Otakon.

Getting There And Where To Stay

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center sits just steps from Mt. Vernon Square station on Metro’s Green and Yellow lines, and both Events DC and convention organizers urge attendees to plan for heavy foot traffic. Given the convention’s size, many attendees opt for Metro, rideshare or nearby hotels rather than driving, and nearby hotel blocks tend to move fast, so early booking is recommended.

Otakorp president Lacey Kishter joined WBAL-TV anchor Jenyne Donaldson to preview the weekend. As WBAL-TV reported, the segment framed the event as offering “something special for everyone.” Kishter is listed as Otakorp’s president on the organization’s site. Otakorp oversees Otakon as a volunteer-run nonprofit.

Expect crowds, long autograph lines and packed panels, and plan accordingly with water, comfortable shoes and a schedule. For last-minute updates, check official announcements before you go and allow extra time to get to the convention center.
