Spoiler Alert !!!
This article contains spoilers from One Piece manga.
Luffy has already awakened the power of the Sun God Nika, but Chapter 1198 of One Piece raises a question that makes his awakening even stranger. Why is the future Pirate King suddenly behaving like a wild animal despite already unlocking Gear 5? The answer has something to do with a rule Eiichiro Oda introduced long before Luffy awakened his Devil Fruit.
The strange part is that Kaido never faced the same problem. Both pirates ate Mythical Zoan Devil Fruits, yet their transformations and behaviour are completely different. And when the white clouds around Luffy are compared with the dark clouds around Kaido, the difference becomes even harder to ignore.
Luffy’s New Zoan Form Contradicts Devil Fruit Awakening
According to the early spoilers, Luffy’s latest appearance in Chapter 1198 is certainly not what anyone expected. After suddenly leaving the battlefield, he reappears in the Giant Village with a dark, ape-like body, a tail, an unusual nose, and sharp fangs. Instead of talking, Luffy makes strange animal noises before jumping onto Rain Goddess Zaza MMA and biting her.
Scopper Gaban also notices Luffy’s Zoan-type nature. This is where things get interesting. Luffy’s Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika, is a Mythical Zoan, and Oda has already shown that these fruits have wills of their own. Remember the Impel Down Jailer Beasts? Their awakened Zoan powers completely changed their behaviour, leaving them acting like wild animals.
So, Luffy’s strange behavior in Elbaf is not an entirely new concept. However, what makes it surprising is that he has already awakened his fruit and unlocked Gear 5. Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation comes with white hair and white clouds around his body. These clouds are often associated with his strong connection to Nika and the idea of freedom. Kaido, meanwhile, had dark, flame-like clouds around his Dragon and hybrid forms. Fans associate this darker appearance with a lack of alignment between Kaido and his Devil Fruit.
Now look at what happened to both characters. Luffy’s white clouds suggest a strong connection with his fruit, yet his latest transformation shows him behaving like an animal. Kaido had the opposite visual appearance, but his Devil Fruit never took over his personality. He remained fully aware and controlled his Dragon powers throughout his fight against Luffy.
Isn’t that strange? If being aligned with a Zoan fruit makes its user more vulnerable to its will, then Luffy’s situation starts making sense. His connection with Nika is incredibly strong, but that does not mean he has complete control over every part of the fruit. Kaido also explained in Chapter 1046 that awakening happens when the user’s mind and body catch up with their powers. Perhaps Luffy’s body has reached a level that his mind is still struggling to handle.
Luffy’s Biggest Battle in One Piece Is to Protect His Free Will

There is something almost cruel about Luffy’s situation. He ate the Devil Fruit of the Warrior of Liberation, a power that represents freedom and the ability to live without restrictions. Yet the same fruit is now raising questions about whether he can remain in control of his own body.
The comparison with the Impel Down Jailer Beasts makes this even more worrying. They lost their original personalities to their Zoan instincts, and Luffy’s latest behaviour shows a similar side of his fruit. The difference is that Luffy has an incredibly strong will of his own. He has never allowed anyone to control his decisions, and that includes the World Government.
This also gives his eventual fight against Imu another layer. The World Government has feared Nika for centuries because the Sun God represents everything Imu stands against. But defeating Imu is only one part of Luffy’s final challenge. He must also prove that he can control Nika rather than allowing Nika’s instincts to control him.
After all, what is the point of becoming the Warrior of Liberation if the power itself takes away his freedom? His biggest battle in the Final Saga is therefore not just about defeating the world’s most powerful enemy. It is about remaining Monkey D. Luffy even after mastering the power of a god.
So, will he manage to control Nika’s full power without losing the free will that makes him who he is? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
