Fans of Kevin Smith’s cult-classic comedy “Mallrats” will have a chance to relive the 1990s when much of the film’s cast reunites in Somerset County later this summer
Iron Peak Sports & Events in Hillsborough will host the reunion during the Super Jersey Summer Spectacular on Aug. 29. Organizers say it is expected to be one of the largest “Mallrats” cast gatherings in the film’s history
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is part of the Super Jersey Summer Spectacular, an offshoot of the popular Super Jersey Comic Expo
Founded by comic and pop culture enthusiasts AJ Blair of AJ’s House of Comics, Paul Brown of Spotlight Marketing Solutions and Stan Kalucki of Comic Collision, Super Jersey Comic Expo features comics, collectibles, cards, creators, cosplay and celebrity guests
The founders said they wanted to build a major comic-centric convention in New Jersey, a state with a strong pop culture and comic book fan base
The “Mallrats” reunion is expected to be the marquee attraction of the one-day event, which also will feature about a dozen comic and pop culture creators and more than 30 vendors
Released in 1995, Smith’s “Mallrats” became a cult favorite for its comic-book humor, quotable dialogue and portrayal of suburban life in New Jersey. The comedy follows friends Brodie Bruce and T.S. Quint after both are dumped on the same day and retreat to a shopping mall, where their plans to win back their girlfriends spiral into chaos
At least nine cast members are scheduled to appear, including Brian O’Halloran, Ethan Suplee, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes, Jeremy London, Joey Lauren Adams, Kevin Smith, Priscilla Barnes and Renee Humphrey
Smith, a New Jersey native, has featured his home state prominently throughout his career. While “Mallrats” was not a major box office success, it developed a passionate following that has endured for more than three decades
How Super Jersey Comic Expo grew
The expo traces its roots to The Middletown Comic Show, a twice-yearly event that ran through 2019. Organizers later created Super Jersey Comic Expo as a larger convention focused on comics, collectors and customer service
The inaugural Super Jersey Comic Expo was scheduled for March 2020 but was postponed twice because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event ultimately debuted Nov. 1, 2021, at Bell Works in Holmdel, drawing more than 1,900 attendees
A second show followed, and organizers planned an expanded event for 2023. When the original venue double-booked the space, organizers moved the convention to another area within the building
Because admission could not be charged in the new location, tickets were refunded and the event became free to attend. Despite the setback, the show drew record attendance and became a commercial success for vendors and artists, organizers said
The experience nevertheless left organizers uncertain about the event’s future because of its financial impact. After taking time to regroup, they sought a new venue and eventually moved to The Dome at Adventure Crossing in Jackson, where the 2025 event attracted a record 5,146 attendees
What to expect in Hillsborough
Organizers say Super Jersey Summer Spectacular 2026 will feature one of the largest one-day comic book, collectible and pop culture show floors on the East Coast
Attendees can browse hundreds of booths offering comic books, collectibles, artwork, gaming merchandise and handmade goods alongside celebrity and creator appearances. The annual Super Jersey Comic Expo is scheduled to return to Iron Peak Sports & Events on April 17-18, 2027
Go: Iron Peak Sports & Events, 141 Mountain View Road, Hillsborough. A general admission ticket is required for Super Jersey Summer Spectacular and is separate from autograph and photo-op fees. One child aged 12 or younger is admitted free with a paid adult ticket. Professional cosplay photos are included with admission.
