Anti-gravity VR racing has had a gap at its center since Sony shuttered Studio Liverpool in 2012, taking the Wipeout franchise with it. Yesterday, at the August 2026 VR Games Showcase, a Cyprus-based indie studio named XOCUS quietly filled it: Omega Pilot: Evolution shadow-dropped on PlayStation VR2 and PS5, making it available right now for anyone with Sony’s headset. The Meta Quest version arrives August 27; Steam and Pico versions are coming later this fall.

VR’s hunger for a proper Wipeout successor is real and well-documented among headset owners, and Omega Pilot: Evolution is the most credible attempt yet to answer it — built by a team that already completed one lap in 2022 with the original Omega Pilot, and returned for a second with bigger ambitions and a broader platform reach.

VR’s Wipeout Void — and the Third Party That Stepped In

The Wipeout franchise — created by Psygnosis and later developed by Studio Liverpool under Sony — defined anti-gravity racing from its PlayStation launch-title debut in September 1995 through a run of acclaimed entries across PlayStation, PSP, PS3, and Vita. The series was known for combining extreme speed, electronic dance music soundtracks featuring artists like The Chemical Brothers and Orbital, and Wipeout weapon-based combat system in which energy shields, missiles, and speed pads were as important as cornering skill.

Sony closed Studio Liverpool in August 2012, canceling what was reportedly a Wipeout title already 12 to 18 months into development for PS4. The last substantive entry in the franchise was Wipeout Omega Collection, a 2017 PS4 VR remaster that brought earlier titles to PS4 and added PSVR support. Nothing followed. A mobile title called Wipeout Merge launched in early 2022 and restructured the gameplay as a management sim. No full console successor to the racing series has appeared in over 14 years.

That leaves a striking situation: Sony owns the IP, Sony manufactures PSVR2, and PSVR2’s Sense controllers — with adaptive triggers that vary resistance dynamically and a built-in headset vibration motor that Sony specifically uses to demonstrate “the thrust of a vehicle as the character speeds forward” — represent the highest tactile-fidelity VR hardware available for a cockpit racing experience. And yet it is XOCUS, registered in Cyprus with a portfolio of VR racing titles across Quest and PC VR, that delivered an anti-gravity combat racer to that hardware first.

    What Omega Pilot: Evolution Is

Omega Pilot: Evolution is a first-person anti-gravity racing game built around extreme speed and skill-based maneuvering. Players pilot hover ships across neon-lit futuristic tracks engineered for high-velocity cornering, drifting, and combat. The game is playable in VR or in flat-screen mode from either first-person or third-person perspective — and every copy includes both versions, so the same purchase works whether you own a PSVR2 headset or just a PS5.

This is XOCUS’s second anti-gravity VR racer. The original Omega Pilot, which launched on Steam in September 2022, offered 33 tracks and 26 ship designs with asynchronous multiplayer and realistic cockpit-view physics. It earned a mostly positive Steam reception for Omega Pilot, with 73 percent of reviews positive from its first 100 reviewers. Evolution is the expanded successor: same first-person cockpit DNA, substantially deeper feature set, and a staggered launch across every major VR and non-VR platform.

Combat Racing — the Feature That Changes the Game

The most significant addition in Evolution over the original is a full Combat Racing Mode. Players can pick up and deploy energy blasters, EMPs, and shields, using them to outmaneuver and outgun opponents mid-race. Deploying a well-timed EMP against the leader ahead of you changes the race from a pure lap-time competition into something closer to positional chess — knowing when to fire versus when to conserve your arsenal, and where to carry a shield against opponents closing behind you.

In VR specifically, combat racing carries an additional dimension that flatscreen cannot replicate. When you are physically seated in a cockpit and need to check whether an opponent is lining up a shot behind you, that requires turning your head — a bodily experience of threat that a traditional thumbstick camera rotation does not produce. The tension is physical.

Racing game veterans who remember Wipeout’s weapon system will recognize the formula. Wipeout’s original power-up pickups — machine guns, missiles, mines, rockets, energy shields, turbo boosts — ran across Wipeout’s weapon pickup system colored X-shaped pads on track surfaces. Evolution updates this to energy blasters, EMPs, and shields deployed mid-combat, but the underlying logic is the same: speed alone does not win races.

Chrono Drift and the Physics Model

Beyond combat, Evolution introduces a new mechanic called Chrono Drift. When activated, Chrono Drift time-slowing mechanic briefly slows down time, giving the pilot a window to navigate obstacles that would otherwise be unavoidable at full race speed.

The core physics model rewards precision. Turbo meter and collision physics respond directly to clean cornering and controlled drifting — good technique fills the turbo meter and delivers speed bursts, while collisions with track walls or other ships reduce vehicle speed and can temporarily lock out acceleration, making contact genuinely costly. The physics model encourages learning track layouts and opponent patterns rather than relying on mechanical button inputs alone.

PSVR2 Hardware Is Built for This

The PSVR2 version of Evolution supports Sony’s Sense controllers with their full PSVR2 Sense feature set. The Sense controllers include adaptive triggers — the L2 and R2 buttons can be set to different resistance levels dynamically by the game, simulating the feel of gripping a throttle, deploying a weapon, or absorbing a hit. They also include per-controller haptic actuators, and the PSVR2 headset itself contains a vibration motor; Sony describes the headset vibration as designed to replicate exactly the kinds of in-game sensations this game produces, including PSVR2 Sense controller specs “the thrust of a vehicle as the character speeds forward.”

The headset displays at 2000×2040 pixels per eye on a 4K OLED panel with HDR, running at 90 or 120Hz per PSVR2 display specifications confirmed. The 120Hz mode in particular is meaningful for a high-speed racing game: higher refresh rates reduce the perceived stutter and visual-vestibular mismatch that makes fast-moving VR content uncomfortable for sensitive users. For players prone to VR motion sickness, a cockpit-view racer like Evolution offers a stable visual frame of reference — the ship’s interior provides a fixed anchor point against the moving track — which mitigates the sensory conflict that causes nausea in open-world smooth-locomotion VR games. Still, high-speed VR racing is rated “Intense” on VR comfort scales, and first-time VR users should approach in shorter sessions.

    Multiplayer, Leaderboards, and Progression

Evolution runs three distinct multiplayer modes. Career mode has players racing asynchronously against the best lap times set by players worldwide — asynchronous career mode gameplay confirmed at the PS5 and PSVR2 launch. Up to five players online can race in real-time in both classic and combat race formats — PSVR2 players will need an active PS Plus subscription for this mode. A ghost rivals matchmaking system pairs players with opponents near their skill level, and even when offline, a player’s performance record generates a ghost rival that other players can challenge.

Cross-platform VR and flatscreen multiplayer means VR pilots and flat-screen PS5 players race in the same lobbies — the game runs both rendering paths against a shared physics simulation. This substantially expands the potential player pool past VR-only headset owners, making it far more likely that multiplayer lobbies stay populated as the player base grows across the staggered platform rollout.

Seasonal events with prize pools and rotating exclusive cosmetics add recurring reasons to return. In-game currency earned from races and victories funds upgrades to ship speed, handling, and hull durability, plus visual customizations to cockpit interiors and hull aesthetics.

    What Is Not Yet Confirmed

Evolution launched without independent critic reviews; no Metacritic scores are available as of this writing. The question that matters most — whether the handling model delivers the specific feeling of Wipeout’s physics at extreme speed, or whether it produces something closer to Redout or BallisticNG — will not be answerable until players and critics log significant time with it. XOCUS’s handling of the original Omega Pilot’s physics earned generally positive Steam feedback, but Evolution’s speed and combat layers introduce new variables.

Multiplayer population is the other open question for any game launching staggered across platforms. The PSVR2 launch pool today will be smaller than the full combined player base once Meta Quest, Steam, and Pico versions arrive this fall. Early adopters will need cross-platform play to find populated lobbies.

Where to Get It — and When

Omega Pilot: Evolution is out now on Omega Pilot Evolution PS Store for PlayStation VR2 and PS5. The base price is $19.

The Meta Quest version August 27 will bring the game to Meta’s standalone headsets. Steam and Pico versions are planned for fall 2026.

Full VR and flatscreen included in every copy of Omega Pilot: Evolution at no additional cost.

VR Games Showcase Brings Bigger Context

Omega Pilot: Evolution was one of more than 25 games announced or spotlighted at the VR Games Showcase August 2026, hosted by UploadVR and Jamie Feltham on August 13. The same showcase revealed High On Life VR from Flat2VR Studios (coming to Meta Quest, PSVR2, and PC VR in 2027) and System Shock VR (also from Flat2VR), signaling a robust second-half pipeline for VR gaming across headsets. Zero Caliber 2 was confirmed for PSVR2 in October. The showcase underscores that August 2026 is a notably active month for PSVR2 software, which had faced criticism earlier in the console’s lifecycle for thin exclusive support.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is Omega Pilot: Evolution available on Meta Quest right now?

Not yet. Omega Pilot: Evolution launched on PlayStation VR2 and PS5 on August 13, 2026 as a shadow drop at the VR Games Showcase. The Meta Quest version launches August 27, 2026. Steam and Pico versions are planned for fall 2026. Every copy includes both the VR and flat-screen versions of the game.

What’s the difference between Omega Pilot and Omega Pilot: Evolution?

The original Omega Pilot (Steam, 2022) was a pure VR racing game: 33 tracks, 26 ship designs, asynchronous multiplayer, and first-person cockpit physics. Evolution adds full Combat Racing Mode (energy blasters, EMPs, shields), the Chrono Drift time-slowing mechanic, a career mode structure, cross-platform play between VR and flatscreen players, real-time multiplayer for up to five players, and launches across PSVR2, PS5, Meta Quest, Steam, and Pico — a substantially broader platform reach.

Do I need PS Plus to play Omega Pilot: Evolution multiplayer on PSVR2?

Real-time multiplayer for up to five players on PS5 and PSVR2 requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription. Asynchronous career mode — racing against globally recorded ghost rivals — does not require PS Plus and is available to all players.

Is Omega Pilot: Evolution likely to cause VR motion sickness?

High-speed VR racing is rated “Intense” on standard VR comfort scales, meaning it is among the more demanding content categories for users sensitive to VR motion sickness. Evolution uses a first-person cockpit view throughout, which provides a stable visual reference point and is generally more comfortable than open-world smooth locomotion — but players who are new to VR or prone to cybersickness should start with shorter sessions and increase duration gradually. The PSVR2 and Quest 3 versions run at 90–120Hz, which meaningfully reduces the visual-vestibular mismatch that causes nausea compared to older 72Hz headsets.
