New York Comic Con began yesterday at Retailer Day, covered in full here on The Beat, with two new lines of collected editions from Marvel Comics. Yesterday morning YouTube personality NearMintCondition broke the news on Instagram that Marvel would be publishing a paperback compendium line dubbed Marvel Bricks. Later on in the day Marvel also announced Marvel Renown, a line of evergreen titles to remain in print.

The Marvel Brick line shares similarities with the compendium editions published by DC, Image, and others. While many of the details remain to be fully revealed, from the graphic shared by NMC and at Retailer Day we can see a few of the first collections to be published in this way. The four initial Bricks are Uncanny X-Men: All New, All Different, Superior Spider-Man: Hero or Menace?, Uncanny X-Force: The Apocalypse Solution, and The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Eats Nuts, Kicks Butts. The trade dress for these editions also features the Marvel Brick logo towards the top, emulating the way “Marvel Omnibus” appears on the oversized hardcovers. Towards the bottom, there are a series of rectangles that are “lit up” to indicate the volume number of each book. We can tell the UXM volume is one of six, Superior and X-Force are done in one, and Squirrel Girlis one of two. Uncanny X-Menappears to collect the beginning of the Chris Claremont run starting with Giant Size X-Men #1. Superior Spider-Man will collect the Dan Slott run, but it’s unclear whether or not the relaunches will be included. Uncanny X-Force collects the Rick Remender and Jerome Opeña run. Finally, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Eats Nuts, Kicks Butts will collect material from Ryan North and Erica Henderson’s runs.
The graphic also includes the tagline for the initiative, “Build your House of Ideas Brick by Brick,” ending with “more to come.” Details are sparse about the exact contents of the titles, and the price has also not been announced. The DC compendiums are all priced at $59.99 but Marvel already has a line of books at that price point, the Epic Collections. Marvel’s initial foray into compact editions ended up being priced at $14.99 versus DC’s $9.99 price point. There is a chance these Marvel Bricks end up a little higher than the average compendium, but should hopefully still be under the price of an oversized hardcover omnibus. From our coverage of the NYCC Retailer Day, the Bricks will also feature newsprint-like paper, also similar to recent experimentations by DC.
Marvel’s retooling of the compact lines and their introduction of Brick compendiums will also be joined by a new line of evergreen books called Marvel Renown. These new Renown editions are meant to keep Marvel’s best stories in print. Evergreen titles are backlist titles that remain in print indefinitely. Many publishers, both in prose and comics, utilize evergreen titles but this is a first for Marvel. The first three Renown titles arePunisher: Suicide Run by Steven Grant,Chuck Dixon, Hugh Haynes, and Gary Kwapisz; Daredevil: The Devil in Cell-Block D by Ed Brubaker, Michael Lank, and David Aja; and All-New Hawkeye by Jeff Lemire and Ramon Perez.
With the move to Burbank and the installation of new Editor-in-Chief, Stephen Wacker, readers have lots of questions about the future of Marvel. Wacker assured fans and retailers in the presentation at Retailer Day that he has plans to address many of their ongoing concerns, and that these books are part of those plans.
