Supergirl has had a mixed reception during its initial theatrical run.
However, the film is not the first adaptation of a popular female comic book character. Over the last few decades, Hollywood has created several lady heroes who claim their power, find love, and fight fascism in their own films.
Here are the memorable movies based on female comic book characters.
Over the years, I became a proud member of the Cult of Barbarella. Based on the popular French comic book, Barbarella is the perfect superheroine for the sexually liberated ’60s. Right from Jane Fonda’s opening striptease in zero gravity to her triumphantly defeating the villainous Duran Duran’s orgasm machine, this movie humorously blends queerness, comic books, and science fiction fantasy in a way few movies have done before or since. What amuses me the most are the movie’s trippy sets, which are bursting with psychedelic colors, imaginative old-school effects, and more than a few scantily clad bodies. The movie looks like a comic book come to life. The universe is flooded with vibrant candy-colored hues, shifting from pastel ice planets to the garish, industrial interiors of the villainous city of Sogo. She may be the film’s villain, but for gloriously gay sci-fi characters, this movie gives us the dangerous dagger-wielding damsel The Black Queen, who in between staring longingly at Fonda, manages to command every scene she is in. If you haven’t seen it yet, give it a whirl. ★ ★ ★1/2
The next film is both a comic book and a Blaxploitation classic. Before Black Panther and even before Blade, Pam Grier made history as one of the first Black actors to lead a film based on a comic book. Here, Grier plays the titular character, Friday, an ex-model-turned photographer/amateur detective who stumbles upon an elaborate murder plot. Blending together fashion, activism, and crime, the movie captures the colorful cosmopolitan spirit of the comic. Those looking for the edgy, violent character that Grier usually plays might be disappointed. This is a film where Grier forgoes her badass action personality in favor of a character who is more of an investigator rather than an ass-kicker. Still, Grier is as charming as ever in the role, which always engages with the social and political issues of the time. It also helps that she’s bolstered by a game cast of supporting players that includes Yaphet Kotto, Scatman Crothers, Eartha Kitt, and Carl Weathers as a sadistic hitman eager to make Grier his next victim. ★ ★ ★
Maybe Tank Girl came out a decade too early. Looking back on them, a lot of those ’90s comic movies were about super cops and law enforcers. That’s fine, but what’s cool about Tank Girl is its anti-authoritarian spirit. In adapting the comic, director Rachel Talalay not only makes the movie colorful, quippy, and just a wee bit gay, but also gets back to the idea of the hero as an outlaw. Of course, parts of the production looked a little tacky at the time, but in retrospect, I dig the blend of freaky animated segments with live action and the choice of Lori Petty as Tank Girl (she fights back with words first, then bullets). The flirty romantic chemistry between Tank Girl and Jet Girl (played by Naomi Watts) feels different because the director isn’t trying to oversexualize its female heroes. I particularly like her solo love scene, in which she erotically cuts holes in her stockings. ★★★
