That ended on August 20. The studio opened a closed community playtest on SteamVR and Quest 3, slots were capped, and it shut down yesterday. Five days. That is the entire window in which anyone outside Stockholm has put hands on this thing, and it closed with no launch date attached.

“Now it’s time to hand over the keys,” is how Erik Odeldahl, Fast Travel’s chief creative officer and co-founder, framed it when the studio announced the test on August 13. Good line. It also quietly admits how long the keys had been sitting in the studio’s pocket.

What the store page says now is Q4 2026. Fast Travel’s own announcement used the softer “later this year,” but the Steam listing has firmed up to a quarter, and Q4 starts October 1. So somewhere in the thirteen weeks between then and New Year’s Eve, an officially licensed PAYDAY game is supposed to ship on Quest and PC VR, and as of this morning nobody has named a day.

I am fine with that, and I would rather they took the time. Fast Travel put a full developer diary and a dedicated Aces High Direct into the June showcase before showing a single second of real gameplay, which is not how a studio behaves when it is shoving a licensed cash-in out the door. The gameplay trailer only arrived twelve days ago.

Four Aces, and they are not palette swaps

The premise is revenge. A business titan named Warren Jupiter frames the crew, and the crew answers by systematically robbing everything he owns: banks, museums, and eventually his personal penthouse. It is a thin excuse to string heists together and it does not need to be anything more than that.

Classes are where it gets interesting. Ace of Hearts is the Mastermind, the planner. Ace of Clubs is the Ghost, built for the stealth runs. Ace of Diamonds is the Technician, who Fast Travel describes as the one “orchestrating the theater of destruction.” Ace of Spades is the Enforcer, and that one needs no explanation. Sitting on top of the four is an arsenal of ARs, SMGs, shotguns and pistols plus gadgets including a grapple and deployable sentry guns, and a currency loop that spends cash and rep on skills and gear.

One playtester write-up mentioned six levels at launch and a camera scrambler they never got around to trying, though that is a hands-on impression rather than something the studio has put on the record. Fast Travel has separately committed to at least one additional heist location as a free post-release update before the end of the year, which, with the base game itself still dated Q4, is an extremely tight promise to have made out loud.

A heist game is a hand game

Here is why I have been loud about this one since March. Strip PAYDAY down to its actual verbs and nearly all of them are things you do with your hands. Drill a safe. Bag the cash. Haul the bag. Cover a camera. Cuff a civilian. Cut, pry, carry, drop, run.
