Allahabad HC refuses to halt Mirzapur: The Movie release amid PIL over violence and obscenity

The theatrical release of Mirzapur: The Moviewill go ahead as scheduled after the Allahabad High Court on Thursday refused to stay its release. The court instead adjourned a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a halt on the film by four weeks.
Mirzapur: The Movie’s stay order rebuked
As the petition was filed by Lucknow-based lawyer Shalu Pandey, who raised objections to the film’s alleged portrayal of Mirzapur and claimed that it contains excessive violence, obscene content and derogatory references to the Uttar Pradesh district. The petitioner had approached the court seeking interim relief just a day before the film’s scheduled theatrical release
Pandey sought a stay not only on the film’s release but also on its trailers and promotional material. The plea further requested that allegedly derogatory references to Mirzapur, explicit violence and obscene content be removed from the movie before it reaches cinemas.
According to the petition, the previous seasons of the Mirzapur series featured profanity, sexual content and graphic violence. Pandey argued that such content violated provisions of the Information Technology Act and contributed to a negative and stereotypical portrayal of the district.
All about the plea
The plea also highlighted Mirzapur’s cultural and economic identity, pointing to the Vindhyavasini Dham, a prominent Shakti Peeth, as well as the region’s GI-tagged carpets and brass handicrafts. It argued that associating the district primarily with organised criminality could cause psychological humiliation to local residents and adversely affect its public image.
The petitioner further claimed that the movie contains scenes involving abuse, sexuality and other content that could have a harmful impact on society, arguing that judicial intervention was necessary.
However, the High Court noted an important procedural issue during the hearing. The respondents had not been served with the petition in sufficient time. Lawyers representing Excel Entertainment Pvt Ltd the production and distribution company owned by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar were served notice only on Thursday evening, just hours before the film’s scheduled release.
In view of this, the court adjourned the PIL for four weeks without granting a stay on the film’s release. Mirzapur: The Movie therefore remains set to open in theatres as planned.
The latest development means audiences will be able to watch the film despite the legal challenge. The PIL, however, remains pending, with the court expected to consider the petitioner’s concerns in greater detail when the matter comes up again after the four-week adjournment.
