The Switch 2, just like the Switch before it, doesn’t allow you to remove its internal battery. At least it’s not built with the intention of users removing the battery anyway, but there are daring owners out there who don’t mind voiding the system’s warranty to tinker with the battery (and other things) in order to get better performance. While that will remain the case here in the states, apparently our friends in Europe will soon have a version of the Switch 2 that makes battery swapping quick and easy.
According to Nikkei, Nintendo is cooking up a version of the Switch 2 for Europe that will allow owners to open up the hardware and replace the battery with ease. The same goes for the Joy-Con 2, which will also have removeable batteries inside. This is all being done in accordance with the European Union’s “right to repair” legislation.
This legislation passed back in 2023, but companies have until February 2027 to comply with the law. In other words, Nintendo has known that they’d have to make this change for awhile now, but they’ve opted to hold off until nearly the last minute to get this removeable battery version of the Switch 2 out the door. We still don’t know exactly when it’ll release, but we should see it arrive before Feb. 2027.
