Nintendo Switch 2 Homebrew Is ‘Very Close to an Amazing Era,’ Says Modder Behind a 60 FPS Mario & Luigi: Brothership Mod

The Nintendo Switch 2 jailbreak will lead to a significant backward compatibility improvement

There was no doubt that the first Nintendo Switch 2 jailbreak would have led to all sorts of different developments, but the reality is going far beyond expectations. From data mining to game dumping and emulation (with NVIDIA DLSS 5 experiments) and unthinkable original Switch ports, it seems like anything is possible for the current-generation Nintendo system, including improving backward-compatible games with mods that let previous-generation games take advantage of the system’s specs.

“We’re very close to an amazing era of Nintendo Homebrew,” said @polionferior on X while presenting a video showing modded Mario & Luigi: Brothership running at 60 FPSon the Nintendo Switch 2. Unfortunately, this mod is not yet available to the public, as @polionferior is not in a position to release it, since they only ported an existing mod.

Although this may not seem like an incredible achievement, any Nintendo Switch 2 owner can clearly understand why it actually is. While many games received Switch 2 Editions that improve resolution, framerate, and add new features, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and the Xenoblade Chronicles series, many others did not receive a new edition yet, and likely never will. PlatinumGames’Bayonetta 3 and Astral Chainimmediately come to mind as games that would benefit immensely from a proper framerate upgrade, and with Switch 2 hacking, it seems like the lack of an official upgrade may not be a problem anymore for those willing to jailbreak their system.

However, as Nintendo will make sure users are forced to use the latest firmware to enjoy recent games such as the soon-to-be-released The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, users may be forced to choose between turning the Switch 2 into the Nintendo Switch Pro we never got, or keeping it updated to play all the latest games.
