Nintendo will be celebrating The Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary in some very big ways. We have The Legend of Zelda movie coming out April 30th, 2027, a worldwide concert tour is taking place, and of course, more Zelda software and hardware is in the works. Without a doubt, it’s a fantastic time to be a Zelda fan.
The next big thing on the horizon for Zelda faithful is one of the biggest, with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time coming to Switch 2 on Nov. 5th, 2026. One week before that Nintendo is releasing the Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 along with a 40th Anniversary Switch 2 Pro Controller. Not surprisingly these products saw pretty much instant sell-outs as soon as pre-orders went live, and now it’s near impossible to find stock anywhere.
In a chat with Coelho, Bill van Zyll, Vice President and General Manager for Nintendo in Latin America spoke about the reception to all things Zelda. According to van Zyll, the Legend of Zelda franchise is a “global phenomenon,” and even though Nintendo thought they were going to be good when it came to stock for the 40th anniversary products, they underestimated consumer response. The good news is that stock replenishment is on the way, but timing for those drops hasn’t been specified, and it will obviously differ between regions.
“Well, if we expected it, we wouldn’t be in that situation, right? At least not to this extent. I will tell you that it’s a global phenomenon. We have this issue absolutely everywhere. We apologize for that. That certainly is not the intent. We underestimated how well it would be received. And there’s certainly some markets that stand out.
The United States did extremely well as well. It’s a global phenomenon where they’re running out of product. The pre-sales are hitting their max, and certainly that’s what happened to us in Brazil.
We are working on replenishments of the special hardware and the software, but it’ll take a little bit of time. So I’m going to use this on you now: please be patient. But yeah, to answer your question, it caught us by surprise. We expected a positive response, but the magnitude, I mean, it’s amazing.
Yes (a Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 restock is coming). I can’t tell you dates right now. We’re working on it. I can’t tell you quantities right now. Again, all being worked on, but that is the plan that we have right now – the special controller, the hardware, the software.”
