Amid the ongoing debate between physical vs digital, Nintendo has weighed in on the situation and made it clear the company doesn’t have any plans to ditch physical releases.
The battle has been intensified this year with Sony‘s announcement that PlayStation would become all-digital in the future, with physical disc production for new releases ending in January 2028.
That has sparked a fresh debate on the topic, but Nintendo has made it clear there are no plans for the company to move away from physical media.
Nintendo Won’t Ditch Physical Games
The stance was made clear by Bill van Zylll, vice president and general manager for Nintendo in Latin America, in an interview with Coelho
“Historically, we’ve been very agnostic, right? We go off what the consumer prefers and take that into account very heavily. We also have a platform that was just launched,” he said.
“We’re barely just over a year into Nintendo Switch 2. It’s got both digital and physical, that capability. There are no plans to ditch physical. We know how much the fans like it as well, so our position has to be agnostic.”

While the stance is a strong one, there is still some uncertainty around Nintendo’s approach given the two different forms of ‘physical’ media available with the Nintendo Switch 2.
Alongside full cartridges, some titles have a game-key card in the physical box, which hasn’t proven to be the most popular approach taken.
It wouldn’t make sense for Nintendo to move away from physical altogether, though, due to aspects like Amiibo still going strong, but fans will be pleased the stance has been made clear.
