Nostalgia-fueled demand for physical Pokémon cards is spilling into crypto, with tokenized grading platforms generating over a billion dollars in cumulative volume

Tokenized Pokémon trading cards have quietly become one of the fastest-growing segments in the digital collectibles space, with platforms that vault physical graded cards and issue blockchain-based representations seeing explosive growth throughout 2025 and into 2026.
The numbers behind the nostalgia wave
Courtyard.io, a tokenization platform built on Polygon that partners with Brinks for vault custody and works with grading companies like PSA, BGS, and CGC, hit over $78 million in trading volume in August 2025 alone. That figure represents a 5.5x increase from January of the same year.
Courtyard’s sales climbed from roughly $50,000 in January 2024 to $50 million by July 2025.
Collector Crypt, a competing platform on Solana, has scaled even faster. By June 2026, it reported cumulative trading volume of approximately $1.3 billion and protocol revenue exceeding $64 million.
The combined tokenized Pokémon TCG trading volume reached $124.5 million in August 2025. The broader physical Pokémon card market itself is estimated at $10-15 billion.
Why Pokémon, why now
Pokémon celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026, and The Pokémon Company has been leaning into the milestone hard. A global all-foil “30th Celebration” set is scheduled for September 2026, and recent releases like the Scarlet & Violet: Destined Rivals expansion, featuring Team Rocket and classic trainer themes, have stoked demand among both new collectors and returning fans.
Pokémon TCG market indices have reported over 180% year-over-year gains, driven by rising nostalgia and a steady cadence of new product releases.
The tokenization model gives those collectors something the traditional market couldn’t easily offer: liquidity. Selling a graded Pokémon card the old-fashioned way means listing on eBay or a specialty marketplace, waiting for a buyer, negotiating, shipping, and hoping nothing gets damaged in transit. Tokenized versions trade instantly on-chain, with the physical card sitting safely in a Brinks vault.
How tokenized cards actually work
A collector sends a graded card to a vault partner. The platform verifies it, stores it securely, and mints a corresponding NFT. That token can be traded on secondary markets, and at any point, the holder can redeem it for the physical card.
Risks worth watching
Vault custody is the most obvious risk. If you’re buying a token that represents a card stored by a third party, you’re trusting that third party’s security, insurance, and operational continuity.
Authentication is another pressure point. Counterfeit graded cards exist in the physical market, and any weakness in the verification process before vaulting could undermine trust in the entire tokenized ecosystem.
Some tokenized card platforms offer pack-opening experiences where users buy digital packs containing randomized cards. The parallels to gambling are hard to ignore, and regulators in multiple jurisdictions have already scrutinized loot box mechanics in gaming.
