A new PlayStation 5 exclusive game has received divisive first reviews from critics. Although the game is set to release on September 15 this year, early reviews from critics have already poured in. Moreover, the upcoming video game has received lower review scores than the developer’s previous games.

Marvel’s Wolverine has received a Metascore of 77 out of 105 critic reviews on Metacritic at the time of writing this article. According to the critics’ reviews, the upcoming game from Insomniac Games has earned 73% positive, 27% mixed, and 0% negative reviews on the rating website.

Insomniac’s ‘WOLVERINE’ game debuts with 78 on Metacritic from 62 reviews.

Marvel’s Wolverine is the first standalone game from the X-Men series and a continuation of Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man games. According to reviews, it lands in the “generally favorable” spot on the rating site. However, the upcoming game is the lowest-rated game from Insomniac Games.

For instance, João Paes wrote, “It’s not the definitive X-Men game, and die-hard fans of the mutant universe might be a little frustrated with the direction the story takes. But for those who like Logan and enjoy a good God of War-style action game, Insomniac delivers quality in spades.”

ComingSoon’s Tyler Treese wrote, “While Marvel’s Wolverine has several issues, it’s the epic motorcycle chases and key action moments that will stick with players after the credits roll. This isn’t quite the home run that Spider-Man was off the bat, but it sets up an intriguing X-Men world that needs to be expanded upon in the future.”

Additionally, Giuseppe Arace added, “Wolverine doesn’t even try to do anything new. It doesn’t break the mold, and that in itself isn’t necessarily a flaw: being revolutionary isn’t a given, after all. However, if you choose a conservative approach, then you have to pay attention to the details to make a difference.”

Spider-Man set a high bar for Insomniac’s next Marvel game

Comparatively, the Spider-Man games from Insomniac Games received overwhelmingly positive scores on Metacritic. Marvel’s Spider-Man, which was released on September 7, 2018, for the PlayStation 4, earned a score of 87 from 116 critic reviews.

On the other hand, the next game, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, was released for the PlayStation 5 on November 12, 2020. It currently has a score of 85 from 89 critic reviews on the rating platform. Lastly, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, released on October 20, 2023, has a Metacritic score of 90 based on 145 critic reviews.

That said, since Marvel’s Wolverine has not yet been released to the general public, the reviews could change over time. The game is available for pre-order on the PlayStation Store.
