Why was GTA 6 delayed?
GTA VI was initially set to be released in the fall of 2025, however Rockstar Games announced in May 2025 the game would not be released until a year later, with a scheduled released date of May 26, 2026.
“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected,” Rockstar Games said in a news release at the time. “The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.”
Rockstar Games said in the news release they needed extra time to “deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
In November 2025, the developer announced a second delay, this time establishing Nov. 19, 2026 as the release date.
“We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve,” the company said in a November 2025 news release. “We want to thank you again for your patience and support. While the wait is a little longer, we are incredibly excited for players to experience the sprawling state of Leonida and a return to modern day Vice City,” the company said.
