El otro padre. Silalencia / Netflix

Netflix has featured many Mexican telenovelas, but My Daughter’s Fatherpiqued my interest as soon as I saw the trailer. It looked like it was ripped from the headlines and a Lifetime movie, but with way more emotion. There is nothing that intrigues me more than a show when families are ripped apart by a huge secrets, but they are forced to work together for the well-being of one of the children.

My Daughter’s Father is a domestic drama about a successful doctor, Maca, who hunts for a kidney transplant for her teenage daughter, Julietta. The twist occurs when none of the family matches, and one of the tests reveals that her husband isn’t Julietta’s biological father.

I found the series an easy binge and found it ironic that while the main title is My Daughter’s Father, the Spanish title reads El Otro Padre. That meansThe Other Father, with varying points of view. This limited series premiered on Wednesday, July 22, and should be added to your watch list.

A horrible secret tears apart families

My Daughter’s Fatheris led by some well-known Mexican actors, including Sil, and Erik Hayser (Dark Desire)

The talented cast helps carry a story that’s been told many times, making it emotional, authentic, and uncomfortable. It’s difficult to believe that Maca could keep a secret that important for two decades without even suspecting that her daughter had a different father. It’s possible she only wanted to believe that Ricardo (Cardona) fathered Julietta, but the betrayal hurt more since her one-night stand was with someone they knew, and it turned their lives upside down.

I suspect Ricardo and Maca would have had difficulty getting past it anyway, but I appreciated the extra twist that Emilio (Hayser) was her ex-boyfriend and the father of her daughter’s best friend. That made things messier, but Julietta should have stayed their number one concern.

There’s no limit to love or lies to protect someone

While much of My Daughter’s Father dealt with the fathers and Julietta, some fierce mama bear claws came out, too. Maca would have done just about anything to ensure her daughter survived, and that rubbed Yolanda, Emilio’s wife, the wrong way.

Every TV series needs an antagonist, and Yolanda was cold, calculating, and intelligent. She knew which schemes to pull and which lies to spread to keep her husband with her. She tried to prevent Emilio and her daughters from talking to the Sotomayors, but that only fueled the fire more.

She didn’t realize that by preventing Emilio from being a donor, she was sending her daughter and Julietta’s brothers into danger as they wrestled with the organ transplant world.

Yolanda only wanted to protect her children, while the others eventually realized they may have to work together for the common goal.

    Is fatherhood blood or love?

That’s at the heart of My Daughter’s Father. It’s not so much about the affair but about a father fearing he’ll lose the daughter he’s raised for 18 years. And make no mistake—Julietta is a daddy’s girl.

It wasn’t simple since Emilio also had daughters, and he wanted to protect them because he feared they might inherit the same kidney disease from him. It tortured him whether he should wait to protect his daughters later or donate a kidney to a daughter he’d only found out about.

Initially, the series leans into an almost resentment between the fathers. They each had something the other wanted. Emilio envied the love Ricardo and Maca once shared, while Ricardo wanted to be Julietta’s father.

The series excelled at highlighting the issues inside the marriages and how they affected all of the children. Both men were loving fathers, but they adapted their parenting and became more open-minded as a result.

My Daughter’s Father was meant to be a quick limitedseries and to show that while a mistake has devastating consequences, some wise people can move on from it and even welcome new ones into the fold.

My Daughter’s Father is currently streaming on Netflix.
