Carmel Town Hall in Mahopac got a temporary makeover July 28 that included new signage and some vintage cars to serve as the fictional Ray Brook New York State Police barracks for an episode of the Netflix series “God of the Woods.”
The multi-generational drama produced by Sony Pictures is based on a Liz Moore novel of the same name and traces the 1975 disappearance of 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar from an upstate summer camp—a mystery compounded by the disappearance of her older brother 14 years earlier.
For the shoot, the parking lot at Town Hall was filled with period-correct vehicles, including old-school NYSP cruisers, an air-cooled VW Beetle, and more.
Mahopac’s moment in the spotlight was more than a vanity project; Councilman Robert Kearns said the one-day shoot “brought $30,000 in revenue to the town for a single day of filming.”
Kearns said Netflix and Mesquite Productions also agreed “to cover all police overtime costs, ensuring there was no additional expense to our taxpayers.”
“Over the course of several weeks, our team worked diligently to plan this event so that filming could take place with minimal disruption to town operations while keeping Town Hall open and accessible for our residents,” Kearns said. “I appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding throughout the day.”
Kearns gave a shoutout to Town Hall staff for demonstrating patience, flexibility, and professionalism.
“Their cooperation helped ensure that Town Hall remained open and continued serving our residents without interruption,” he said. “A special thank you also goes to the Carmel Police Department for their outstanding assistance and professionalism. Their efforts were instrumental in making today’s production a success.”
While this week’s shoot is over, Kearns said it’s possible the producers may return.
“This is more than just a one-day event,” he said. “We have built a strong working relationship with Netflix and Mesquite Productions, and they have expressed interest in returning to film future projects in our town. That means additional revenue for the Town and increased business for our local restaurants, shops, and other businesses.”
Kearns added that the shoot comes just weeks after the town made an agreement with online sports betting and gaming platform DraftKings to film an ad spot starring Kevin Hart, Nick Jonas, and Carmelo Anthony.
“These opportunities showcase our community as a great place for film productions while creating new revenue streams and supporting our local economy,” Kearns said.
