October is going to be a big month for Netflix Canada. The platform is adding a number of iconic television shows, including one of the longest-running primetime series in American history.
Gunsmoke, which premiered on Sept. 10, 1955 and ran for 20 seasons until March 31, 1975, is coming to Netflix north of the border next week
What to know
Gunsmoke is arriving on Netflix Canada next Monday, Oct. 5, per Moore. It is the first of several high-profile shows being added throughout the month, with others including The Twilight Zone, Dynasty andCharlie’s Angels.

While 20 seasons of the original Gunsmokewere released, only the first 14 will be available on Netflix Canada.
One of TV’s greatest hits
Gunsmoke, which featured James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon and was the second Western series to ever premier on television, after after The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, was nominated for 15 Emmy Awards throughout its run, winning five.
In 2013, TV Guide Magazineranked the show 27th on its list of the 60 Best Series of All Time. The longest-running TV Western ever, Gunsmoke was at one point the longest-running American primetime TV series.
It was eventually replaced by The Simpsons, and today is the eighth-longest running primetime showin United States history.
