    • Netflix recently canceled the well-received and highly-watched show “The Boroughs” just weeks after its premiere, despite it being one of the streamer’s most-watched shows of the year.
    • “The Boroughs,” a supernatural sci-fi series from the creators of Stranger Things, followed a group of retirees in a retirement community in New Mexico who uncover a terrifying threat, receiving critical acclaim and strong viewership rankings.
    • The decision to cancel “The Boroughs” was reportedly influenced by high production costs and the Duffer Brothers’ departure to Paramount, with Netflix confirming through its own data that the show was one of its most-watched of the year, ranking No. 41 with an estimated 23.1 million viewers in the first half of 2026.

Last month, Netflix quietly canceled a show that by all accounts seemed to be one of its best-received and most-watched shows of the year. Now, Netflix has confirmed this with its own data.

When Netflix canceled The Boroughslast month, just weeks after its premiere, it came as quite a surprise given that the show appeared to be performing well and receiving great reviews. Now, after Netflix’s own data proves that it was indeed one of the streamer’s most-watched shows, that decision is even more mystifying.

    Netflix Canceled ‘The Boroughs’

From Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers, The Boroughs is a supernatural sci-fi series that follows a group of retirees living in what appears to be a perfect, desert retirement community in New Mexico. All is well until they discover a terrifying, otherworldly threat that is feeding on their community and begin to investigate.

“In the sun-drenched expanse of the New Mexico desert lies The Boroughs, a picturesque retirement community promising its residents the time of their lives,” the official synopsis reads. “But for new arrival Sam Cooper (Molina), paradise feels more like a prison. Everything changes when a terrifying nighttime encounter reveals that something monstrous is stalking the manicured cul-de-sacs.

“Dismissed by the powers that be as just another confused old man, Sam finds unlikely allies in a band of neighborhood misfits: a sharp-witted former journalist, a spiritual seeker, a cynical music manager, and a brilliant doctor running out of options. Overlooked and underestimated, these unlikely heroes must band together to unravel the dark truth at the heart of The Boroughs before their time runs out.”

The show was a hit with critics, receiving a 97% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, including 91% with “Top Critics” on the rating service. Meanwhile, the audience score was a strong 79%. The show also seemed to be getting strong viewership, as it ranked in the streamer’s top-10 until its cancellation.

While Netflix has not officially announced a reason why the show was canceled, The Hollywood Reporterreported that the show’s high production costs played a role in the decision, as did the Duffer Brothers’ decision to leave Netflix for a four-year deal with Paramount.

    One of Netflix’s Most-Watched Shows

Last week, Netflix shared its What We Watched Report, which showed viewership numbers from its shows through the first half of 2026. Netflix’s own data confirmed what fans already assumed: in deciding to cancel The Boroughs, the streamer canceled one of its most-watched shows of the year.

The show ranked No. 41 amongst Netflix’s most-watched shows of the year, raking in an estimated 23.1 million viewers through the first half of 2026. It’s also worth noting that the data is only through June, and the show only premiered on May 21, meaning that all of this viewership came within about a month of the show’s premiere.

The show outperformed several shows that have already been renewed for follow-up seasons, like Emily in Parisseason 5 and The Four Seasonsseason 2.

Needless to say, it’s no longer speculation that The Boroughs was a hit despite its cancellation, as Netflix’s own data now proves it.
