It’s very rare for a Netflix miniseries to be brought back for a new season – but that’s exactly what’s happened to The Beast in Me, the psychological drama starring Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys.
Weeks after Rhys won an Emmy for his role in the show, Netflix has announced it’ll bring the show back for a second run, despite being originally intended to be one completed series. The series was nominated in the Limited Series category at the Emmys.
The Beast in Mefollows Aggie Wiggs, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer whose world is dangerously rocked by her new neighbour, Nile Jarvis, a famous business magnate who was suspected of killing his wife. Danes will return in season two.
Episodes were a protégé of X-Filescreator Chris Carter, and 24 and Homeland producer Howard Gordon, who tapped up Danes to star in the series. Gordon and his fellow season one producer, Daniel Pearle, will showrun season two
At the time of the show’s release in November 2025, Gordon told Deadline a follow-up season was possible, adding: “I do think that there’s certainly room for another chapter.”
At the series’ New York City red carpet premiere, Rhys shared his partner Keri Russell’s reaction to some of the more shocking scenes, quipping to The Independent: “When she saw it, she was like, ‘This is tailor-made for you. This is the person you truly are. It’s about time the world knew who you are. She saw the beast in me a long time ago and wasn’t that impressed then.”
The actor made history at the Emmys after winning not just for The Beast in Me, but for Apple TV+ series Widow’s Bay. Together with his 2018 lead drama win for The Americans, he is the first male performer to win in all three lead acting categories, which are separated into drama, comedy and limited series.
“It certainly hasn’t sunk, sunk in,” Rhys told reporters after winning the trophies. “[I’m] stumbling for words, because I really don’t have them at the moment. I really can’t quite believe it.”
Other shows that started life as limited series on Netflix but had follow-up seasons greenlit are Beef and Untamed.
