    Nana Patekar in Welcome

Nana Patekar passed away at the age of 75 following a massive cardiac arrest while in his Goa home at around 5:20 am on October 8, 2026.

Born as Vishwanath Patekar, Nana Patekar started his career in Hindi films with the 1978 movie Gamanand went to feature in several acclaimed “parallel cinema” classics like Aaj Ki Awaaz, Giddh, Ankush, Mohre, TrishagniandOscar-nominated Salaam Bombayamong others.

Nana Patekar’s Breakthrough & Mainstream Success

It was Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s crime thriller Parinda(1989) that became his major breakthrough in the mainstream and made him a nationwide phenomenon.

He followed it up with cult hits and blockbusters like Krantiveer, Tirangaa, Angaar, Agni Sakshi, Ghulam-E-Mustafa,Yeshwant, Ab Tak Chhappan,Welcome andHousefull 5among others.

These films were not only box office hits but also made Nana Patekar a pop culture phenomenon.

Nana Patekar – Forever a Pop Culture Icon

While Nana became a major box office star, his unique acting style, dialogue delivery and the way he carried himself made him a pop culture phenomenon among the youth of the ‘90s and he continues to remain one even today almost four decades later.

InParinda, his histrionics are imitated till today, so his crow-pleasing and hard-hitting sequences inKrantiveer and Tirangaa. The clips of these movies are viral even today.

Absolute legend of an actor, one of the best we have had in Indian cinema. Thank you Nana Patekar for your contribution to art and cinema. May he rest in peace. ❤️‍🩹🙏 https://t.co/uHQts74Ovf

RIP to one of the legendary thespians of indian cinema 🙏🏽 https://t.co/whAyTacK5X

In fact, you remember the iconic “Palat” scene from Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge? Well, it was Nana Patekar who did it first in the 1992 film Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. And what’s more interesting is that Shah Rukh Khan was at the receiving end of that scene.

Rest in peace legend 🕊️ https://t.co/TPB0BNlpVO

In 1997, Nana Patekar starred in Yeshwantwhile the movie was a success at the box office, it isn’t as memorable today compared to other films of his from the same era.

But it did feature a dialogue that went viral before the internet and social media era, and of course, it could be considered problematic today.

The dialogue was, “Ek Machchar Aadmi Ko Hijra Bana Deta Hai”.

In recent years, some scenes from his lesser-known or flop films too started going viral online as Gen Z discovered the phenomenon that is Nana Patekar.

In 1995, he starred alongside Rishi Kapoor in Shafi Inamdaar’s Hum Dono.

Check out his viral scene from the film below:

In fact, a slightly dark scene from his Oscar-nominated film Salaam Bombaytoo often goes viral where he shown manhandling a child. It has now become a meme online.

And then there was this eerie yet funny scene from the 1996 blockbuster Agni Sakshiwhere he berates a group of people for playing loud music late night.

This is hands down my favourite Nana Patekar scene from Agni Sakshi the fact he played the villain so effortlessly but also added his own comedy touch in to it 💔 #RIP #NanaPatekar https://t.co/NJz2EEtoYr

    1 January 1951 – 8 October 2026

A voice, a personality and an acting style that could never be replicated.

From Parinda, Prahaar, Krantiveer and Agni Sakshi to Ab Tak Chhappan, Apaharan, Natsamrat, Raajneeti and Welcome, Nana Patekar gave us performances that became a part of Indian cinema’s legacy.

His intensity, dialogue delivery and ability to disappear into a character made him one of the most unforgettable actors of his generation.

Indian cinema has lost a true legend.

Rest in peace, Nana Patekar. 🕊️

Post 2000s, Nana Patekar transitioned into character roles but continued churn out bangers for pop culture.

In the 2005 film Bluffmaster,Nana Patekar showed the world what it means when they say, “Doosron Ki Jai Se Pehle Khud Ko Jai Karein”.

Thank you, Nana. You taught us the first lesson in how to be a narcissist. Since then, everything has been relatable, and nothing has shocked us.

Travel well. You were an actor par excellence.

    We will miss you.

Then there was the lesser-known Tum Milo Toh Sahiwhich flopped at the box office but several of its Nana Patekar scenes live on through memes in pop culture.

Beyond the comedic scenes, in Ram Gopal Varma’s The Attacks of 26/11,Nana Patekar showed that he may have aged, but his rage remains the same.

    भावपूर्ण श्रद्धांजली

Thank you nana patekar for everything representing marathis and being best actor and humble nature https://t.co/jluqaVXmCS

In 2025, he was seen in Housefull 5and his special appearance was damn funny. Nana Patekar doing Phugadi with the Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh and others is a treat to watch.

And finally, we come to Welcome. What else can I say about this cult classic and Nana Patekar’s iconic performance as Don Uday Shetty.

19 years on, the cult of Welcomecontinues to rise. It’s sad there were reports of him returning to the character in Welcome 4but that may remain unfulfilled now.

Check out some of the most iconic scenes ofWelcomebelow:

Nana Patekar has given us many memorable and powerful characters over the years, but Uday Shetty from #Welcome will always have a special place in our hearts. ❤️

A character that became iconic, unforgettable and timeless.
